Max - great news

Cheering madly for Max! What fabulous news!

My little Max is also overweight. He's just come off of 2.5 months of heartworm treatment and he's porky. And now he's got bursitis in his shoulder so we're trying to get him some relief there.

So anything you want to share about the weight loss program would be appreciated!

Mally was at the vet's yesterday for his yearly shots.

Mally gained 3 pounds since the last visit. Mally has arthritis in his legs.(the extra weight does not help his arthritis.)

Our vet said to cut back on his food. Mally is now to have only 1/3 cup dry kibble twice a day. (before he was eating 1/2 cup twice a day) Doctor also said to slow down on the treats, and give very few of them. He said if Mally starts to loose weight it is easier to up the food some if needed.
This was our vet's advice.

ps Praying your Max and our Mally do well on their weight loss programs.

Denise, our Max gets 1/3 morning and 1/3 evening with green beans for lunch. He gets maybe 4 pea sized bites of cheese for lunch, too. And for treats....he gets ONE cheerio at a time.

I'm afraid if I feed him any less that his nutrition will suffer.

Liam and Natale each get 1/3 cup of kibble with frozen green beans twice a day, Emma gets 1/4 cup. They each get a tiny cookie at 10, 3 and 7. (Dad insists on still having a coffee break twice a day, even though he has been retired for years, and feels guilty having a snack if the dogs can't have something. He has been known to refuse to eat himself if the dogs have to fast). It is as your vet said - we can up the food quantity easier than lower it.

More good news , max was 41.5 and today is 38" Yippee. Ok he is on Purina over weight management. 3/4 in am, 3/4 pm, that includes small amt of fresh chicken. Lunch time and 9pm he get 1/3 c of string beans. For his walk he get sweet potato treats and during the day if need be ( try not to) I give him pieces of cut up frozen banana! Walk him on the boardwalk everyday. He walks so slow that its not a long walk! This new food has more protein and is more filling and it's working. Also his thyroid is normal now, which must help. I am so happy for all of us, we have been trying to get him lighter and all he was doing was gaining for three years. What ever it is I am grateful. We get this food from the specialist but I am sure all vets must carry it. Oh she made me cut out the fish oil too.

The low fat food max was on he wasn't get the nutrients needed and I gave him a lot of supplements. That food was prescribed by my reg vet because of his pancreas. But the new food only has a few percent more fat and is more filling and better nutrients. Purina over weight management, from the vet.

Is Molly on low fat or regular food. The nutrients are important. Hope he loses weight without cutting back anymore.

Oh no, I did not mean for you to give Max any less than the third cup twice a day.
I agree with you. Sounds like you are already feeding Max the perfect amount for weight loss. I was feeding our Mally 1/2 cup twice a day. Mally was just put on this 1/3 cup twice a day amount. I did ask our vet if the third cup twice a day was enough nourishment for Mally and he said it was.

Hoping both our boys are now able to loose the weight.
