Meadow's ears

I can't take credit! The breeder did them the day we picked her up and showed me how - hers is a more complicated way with tape, adhesive and yarn to bring the ears up on her head. We think we are going to try just gluing but we're letting them be for a little bit - her ears were red inside from the tape and/or adhesive. With the glue, we can just glue hair to hair and avoid irritating the ear tissue. But I'm sure happy with how they look right now!

Sharon, I also found gluing the ears creates a lot less problems with irritation than taping/yarn/etc, because the ears are still open and not sealed together. Also, I think gluing is a lot easier to do! If they need to be braced on top of the head for a while longer, you can just take a piece of hair from each side and glue that lightly together.

Meadown is a beauty and those ears look terrific now!

Here's a photo of Meadow's ears after we released them from the tape and yarn. I think they look pretty good! We're going to let them be for a few days, the inside of her ear where the tape and adhesive were is red. I know they won't stay like this (too bad!) for long so we'll re-glue but I'm happy with how high they are on her head. What do you all think?

Gluing is pretty easy, I couldn't get the bracing to lift them higher on the head but Minnie didn't really need that done

While gluing is easier, I did find taping to last longer. And with gluing, I did have an issue, cuz the boys play so hard, that a few chunks of hair were torn out twice I think. Brodie had a big bald spot on his head for a bit when he was young from the first hair fiasco.

A friend of Ann's actually showed me a way to tape ears that is way simpler than what you see on line. She trims the hair from the interior of the ear, all those tiny hairs and then around the edges and then cuts one base piece shaped to the ear - that was toughest for me and I wasted a ton of tape, next time I would use paper to shape and then trace it on the tape. She then uses a piece of tape folded over to connect tape to tape. I found the dogs played so hard that Kooper could pull that up after a while. I ended up using glue for direct tape to tape.

I hated Dethatchol - dried his ears out so bad said breeder thought I bought some lice or something into her home - I freaked her out so bad! I liked Uni-Solve wipes with the tape. I left them in where the glue would be super old (my tape ears lasted 4 weeks!) and then just slowly wiped along the lifted edge where they were already lose from being on there from some time. I used the wipes, from bottom to top - slowly and the tape would just come off. Very clean, only had irritation once and Ann glued them for me. For glue, I liked human hair extension glue from Amazon and loved that I could get it colored to match Brodies black hair! Dethatchol works better for glue than tape - just made a mess. Next dog I will try some of human hair extension removers to see how they work.

Ears stink! My first dog had pricked ears, Brodies are tipped but one better than the other. Even now, when we snuggle at night I massage his ears on that crease......

Oh my goodness! Meadow is beautiful, she has the cutest muzzle. I'm not much of an expert but I'd say they are looking great so far! With my last two shelties I never minded their ears, but with Alvin I committed to it, with the help of my breeder, and in hindsight, really glad I did. I would also apply small amount of glue only to the hair, but was guilty of giving him 24-48 hours break, because I'm a wimp. I think Meadows ears are sitting up quite nicely! Enjoy that puppy phase!

Well dang. Glued Meadow's ears yesterday, she was pretty good for us, a bit wiggly of course. The bridge part did not hold at all. I used Liquid Stitch fabric glue. The ear parts seemed OK but she scratched them out by the end of the day. :rolleyes2: Brooke's breeder sent me some moleskin with a sample cut out - two pieces, a small one for tip of ear and a longer one for the base. We may have to try that. Her left ear is starting to lift a bit. Wish me luck!!!
