Mia...is coming home-

Michelle I saw an episode of It's me or the Dog and Victoria was helping a woman with her older dog who was deaf and Blind. She put different scented candles in each room so the dog would get to know separate rooms. You do not have to light then as the dogs sense of smell will pick it up anyway. She also used different textured mats in front of steps so the dog would know when it felt the mat to go up or down. Just a few little tricks that may help. I am just so excited for you.

Wow almost albino. Cool looking though. I imagine she will blend with the herd fast and be buds with Jasper and Trapp in about 5 minutes. Bumper will just be going 'oh mommmmmmm not another dog'

Those sound like outstanding ideas!!!!

Michelle, I've been thinking about you and Brian all afternoon and what wonderful people you are! I have a feeling Mia's going to fit into your home perfectly.

I can't really tell by the picture; does Mia have mal-formed eyes? Cooper has one like that. But that boy does not know he is partially disabled. And when he puts his little head on my chest and looks at me lovingly with his one good eye, you know he's thinking, "life is good, this woman loves me!"

Mia will know your love regardless of her sight and hearing. God bless you for opening your home to yet another four legged friend!

Thank you Dawn,I appreciate the tips.We actually anticipate Mia will no doubt be able to distinguish the differances in the floors here.I know it is how Bumper could tell the differance.Every texture and surface, whether we realize it,carrys a differant vibration.

I kinda giggled with the candle thought..my oh my..there are candles in every room here, never lit just for decoration though.

One of the things we did have to do with Bumper, and I'm sure this will also play into Mia's adjustment, but when Bumper would wake from a nap, whether it be on the back of the sofa,or snuggled in a blanket...when she woke up on several occasions when a small kitten, she seemed to be lost.

On the advice from Alana (coordinator of blind cat rescue) she told us to take Bumper and place her in her litter box. That way she could get her bearings, and remember the lay of the house.

It seemed to work very well. She associated her litter box,as a safe place. We also do keep her food right next to her litter, which is located in our bedroom.

We have never changed where her food is kept.As a matter of fact,we tried a new cat food dish, and she wants no part of this pretty dish we bought. So definately a creature of habit.

From what i understand there is only eye tissue there.Although it seems to be discolored,as if a pupil may have tried to develope. It has a darken circled spot, but no actual pupil there.

We have talked to Laura,as to what she thinks about having Mia's eyes suctured, but she feels the same as we do.So long as there are no issues, and no infections,we shall leave them as is.Just keep saline handy for those just in case moments~

It was something we talked at length to our vet concerning Bumper. She is 2,and we have never had one issue of eye infections.Ad she is in kitty litter splashing it around like crazy!

The deciding factor to not sucture, was when Bumper falls asleep, she closes her eyes.

So it will be interesting to know if Mia does this as well. For us to take away the ability for Bumper to close her eyes,I felt would be devastating, and more upseting. So why mess with it.She is comfortable as is.

I got a little choked up reading that. Not sure why, but that really touched me. You are a very special person to help out your pets in need, as you do.

Thanks.....

Oh Danielle~

I'm sorry~

I believe that any animal deserves the right to a quality of life,no matter what the disability.I know all of us here on this forum feels the same.

But when I first laid eyes on Bumper, there was reason she survived. There was something greater than life itself that day, that brought me to the place I was taken to.
It was by chance,I saw Bumper for the first time. Was in the right place,at the right time.As she was to be euthanized 2 days later.

As far as her ability to close her eyes..to her its what an animal does when they sleep. She feels she is normal in every aspect.I did not want to take away, the one normal thing she had the ability to do.

Shelties in particular squeeze their eyes shut. In the words of Dr. Shelli (I'm pretty sure), they 'sleep hard.' I didn't notice until then that they really do concentrate on sleeping or staying asleep and squeeze their eyelids shut.

Someone who thinks they know EVERYTHING told me I should have Cooper's eye removed. But both the vet that saw him while with the MidFlorida Sheltie Rescue, and my vet said there is no reason to remove his eye. As long as it is not dry and does not look infected he is fine. His bad eye follows his good one, and you can see that it tried to form, so we think he may see some light from that eye. So as long as we can keep it, we will. I would imagine it would be the same with Mia. We just have to keep our eyes on their eyes!!!

Thursday is homecoming day!

Just got a phone call from Lara, and she will be bringing Mia home to us on Thursday morning.

After consulting with her vet,he told Lara that until Mia is completely bearing weight on her leg, then a spay will have to be on hold. She is bearing weight, but not totally, and still limps,as the splint was just removed last Friday.

When she is completely healed Lara will come here to take her to be spayed, and come home to recuperate after.

So we will start a new thread, and share the homecoming day with everyone.
