MISSING: Sheltie in Winchester, KY - FOUND SAFE!

I'm so sorry to hear this. I JUST went through this a few weeks ago with my Lark. She came home after 5 days missing. It wasn't that we found her... She wandered home. I had put her crate on the porch, and kept it loaded with food. One morning I came home from work, and there she was in the crate. There were no sightings during the time she was gone , and I am in the middle of heavily wooded area in Shepherdsville KY.
Here's what helped for us. Put up flyers where ever possible. Stores, gas stations, light posts, stop signs. Give a flyer to police, mail man, vets, animal control, post office, garbage pick up people. Now, if you have anything of his that was last touched by his, you could take a pair of tongs, pick it up with them, and put it in a bag. Try to get a tracking dog who has tracked lost dogs before out to track where your dog was lost from (I know of 2- 1 in Louisville, 1 in Shelbyville.. I'm not sure how far Winchester is from here or if they'd be willing to travel). Even if they don't find your dog, they will hopefully be able to provide a couple of indications on areas the dog is hanging out in. From there, you can set a live trap in the area indicated that the dog seems to be around (try local animal control, or one of the two KY sheltie clubs- KSSC has a live trap). Try walking the area on a daily basis, leaving a scent trail from the indication spots back to your house. Check the trap often. Also, put flyers in the mailboxes of all neighbors on the streets surrounding the areas the tracking dogs indicate. Put out a crate with food on your porch. Sometimes they will wander back on their own, and it is good to have somewhere they consider safe to go. Once my puppy was home, that's where she went, and she stayed until I came for her. There is also a animal communicator in KY who will try to contact lost pets for free. My Lark was stressed and told her she didnt want to talk. My agility trainer however has gotten some very useful information from her in the past, so she is good, if you want to try (it never hurts to exhaust even the strangest options when one is missing). Don't forget to offer a reward on the flyer. I was told point blank that when my Caleb went missing when kids let him out of my yard during the day on the 4th a few years ago that the only reason they returned him was because of the reward. He was too pretty and too well mannered for someone to want to give up easily.
I had two people track my Lark, and we put out two traps in areas indicated. On top of that, my Athena tracked her as well. She is a green tracking dog, but is one my trainer thinks could get her tracking championship. She indicated the area the other two picked out plus more. I would offer to try tracking her for you, but she is just such an inexperienced dog, and I'm not sure if she would be much help (though she did well on my lost Lark). I walked the area daily, leaving food in the traps, calling her name, bringing my other dogs out with me. It kept my scent fresh in the area, and gave her a trail to hopefully follow home. We had flyers in all of the mailboxes in the houses around the indicated areas.
If you're going to do the tracking option, time is of the essence. The longer it has been, the more the scent can dissipate. Rain or snow will make it worse. That said, we tracked Lark on a track aged 60 hours, with light rain. It can be done, but is easiest when you have a fresh scent to follow that hasn't had many disturbances. If you do try the tracking dog idea, you want one that has successfully tracked dogs before. Not all dogs will track other dogs. Not all handlers have the patience to track a dog. Dogs are much harder to track than people. There is usually a lot of circling that occurs, and you will often find more than one trail to follow.
Good luck. Keep your hopes up, keep looking. Even in the country, dogs can and do come home. This is the second I have had go missing in the country. The first was at a friends house after a dog show. We put our dogs out in her yard, and next thing we knew, my bi-blue had climbed the fence, and was out into the woods, and acres upon acres of farmland. We couldn't find her anywhere. The next morning, she had climbed back into my friends yard. If you need help with resources, I can help

Just read on the facebook page that Monet is home! So happy for you! :) I can't imagine losing either of my boys

That's wonderful news that Monet is home. I am so happy for you both. Pia did a runner when left with my daughter - 7 hours later, after being sighted 5 miles away and running, she reappeared at my daughter's house! What causes such behaviour I wonder?

Oh I am so relieved. I worried all night. I'm glad that she's back. For those of us not of Facebook, how did she make it back, when? etc.

So glad he's home, it breaks my heart every time I hear about a lost sheltie, especially one who has been re-homed. They are such sweet, sensitive little souls.

Monet is gorgeous, btw.

Monet is Home!! I tried to edit my post, but I can't seem to, so if an admin could fix it, it would be wonderful! I will be posting his story as soon as I can get it all typed up. :)

All of your thoughts and prayers are what helped bring him home. I'm still in shock he's in my house. Thank you all!!

Monet is HOME!!!!

16 and a 1/2 hours after our ordeal began, my puppy came back into my life. It's still amazing to me how it happened... Just like a dream. I tried to post this last night, but my internet was spotty. I do have a facebook app on my phone, but my internet is not great on it either, and I don't remember my password on here (I have it stored on the computer, haha.) It's insane to think it's been 24 hours exactly since he left my life. Yesterday afternoon was a nightmare. I apologize this is going to take a while, Monet is demanding my attention. ;)

For those of you who didn't see my initial post, Monet jumped over my shoulder out of the car when I went to get him at the house. I almost got him back, but he finally spooked and ran off. The last I saw of him, he was heading off the corner of our property and then he was gone. I spent 8 hours searching for him by binocular and putting flyers in everyone's mailboxes in a 15-20 mile radius. We passed out 125 flyers. I trekked across all of my neighbor's property in a 5 mile radius, and searched the rest by car. Let me tell you, I know the layout of the land a lot better than I used to, and I saw most of it by binocular.

Last night after we exhausted all our options and dark closed in, I put his crate outside, with a good tablespoon of puppy food in it. I finally managed to fall asleep at around 1 am. I checked out the back door, and no puppy.

Then, at 2:30, mom comes sweeping in my room. I swear I thought I was dreaming. She tells me she heard scratching at the door! I thought she was crazy then. But, when I came downstairs, there was my cat, staring out into the darkness. I opened the door slowly, and checked the cage. The food was gone. My heart skipped a beat.

At the end of the back porch, standing there terrified, was my puppy. He was a muddy, disgusting mess, his coat and tail were stringy and he looked so small. He ran off, and I just wanted to cry. Then, he came back. I grabbed a spoonful of puppy food and put it on the porch, and he ran up, grabbed it, and headed for the safety of the grass.

It was a long, arduous process trying to get him into the house. The first time he put all four paws on the carpet, I wanted to shout in excitement. I ended up rolling the wet food in little balls, and tossing them onto the floor. He even went so far as to eat out of my hand, licking my fingers, but when I slowly transitioned a hand over to grab his collar, he ran off again.

We tried to lure him in and shut the door, but he was too fast. I worried he would never come back in again. I looked out the door, and there was no puppy. My heart sank again, and I waited to see if he would come back, calling out his name.

His tiny frame appeared in the light again. Mom left this time, taking the cat with her into the bedroom, and it was just Monet and I, in the freezing cold with the door open. I knew he wanted in so badly, but he was just worried. The 1/2 hour seemed like hours. He would grab a bite, and run outside. I worried he would get full, and then just disappear into the night.

The last bite, he started licking my hands, and I put food in both hands. I would slowly bring my right hand under his chin, keeping him preoccupied with food on my left. It seemed impossible to ever grab him, but I finally got a hold of his ruff (thanks goodness for the sheltie fur!). He didn't fight, but instead I felt him relax, like he knew it was the right thing. I grabbed him and shut the door, and immediately held him to me, crying.

He was filthy, smelled rank, and was covered with burs. I wish I had any idea where he went, but no one sighted him. He may have gone to hide somewhere, I have no idea. There were farmers working all over the place, and no one spotted him.

He's now relaxing beside me, he got a good bath this morning. I still have to de-bur him. I found some blood on top of his head after I bathed him, but I couldn't find any source. So it must have just been a bit that spread, because I checked carefully in that and the surrounding areas.

I now get to call the animal shelter, and go take down some of my flyers. I am so excited he's home! He's even more of a love bug than he was when he left. He crawled up between me and the computer and proceeded to lick my arm. Even tried to play a little this morning.

I am so amazed at how smart this boy is. I can't believe he found his way home! And thank you all so much for the thoughts and prayers. I truly believe St. Francis helped my lost puppy find his way home.

What would a return post be without photos? He was really comfortable when I put him in his crate last night, this is how he slept for several hours:

And this is why it was so hard to post this, my boy was demanding all of my attention. ;) And boy I was happy to give it!
