More problems with Yogi

Sending get well wishes for Yogi. Hope you find out soon what is causing his discomfort. Did not realize dogs could get colonoscopy's. Gentle hugs tonight when he gets home.

Poor Yogi, thinking of you two and hope you had a good night.

Which specialist are you being referred to? I have heard good things about Newmarket and Bristol uni.

Poor Yogi and for you too. I know this must be so hard not knowing. I bet they will get him fixed up and he will be much better before you know it.

Thank you for your good wishes everyone, it have really given me a boost to read these. We've just got back from the vets this evening.
Yogi was not quite right this morning, still a bit wobbly and crouched on the rear end but having been out a couple of times and done some more little normal poos he is now much brighter. I've just taken him back to the vets for his check up and they are pleased with his recovery so far. He's had the catheter removed and an internal inspection and there is no more blood, a further indication that there is no tumour. I had quite a lengthy chat with the vet about the next step, which is the referral to a specialist vet for an endoscopy and ultrasound to check the state of the bowel. The suspected diagnosis at this stage is colitis, which is difficult to accuratly diagnose as it requires a biopsy along the length of the colon apparently, which is quite an invasive proceedure obviously and not necessary if they can narrow it down to colitis being the most likely cause. So now we've come home with some tins of Hills Perscription W/D, a high fibre special colitis diet to get his gut working properly again before going for the endoscopy and ultrasound. The vet is quite hopeful this can be managed with an appropriate high fibre diet and without the need for long term medication, all really positive news. I asked him if feeding a raw diet in the future was a possibility and he seemed to think it might well do the trick, just a case of trial and error until we get this fixed.

I am so relieved as yesterday I honestly thought the worst as he was in such a bad way. He's a different dog this evening and no cone of shame as he's much more comfortable. He has lost weight over recent weeks but now we seem closer to a correct diagnosis I'm hopeful he can finally start getting back to normal. Interestingly the vet I saw yesterday and today thinks the parasites found in his sample were a red herring as they would not cause the acute symptoms seen yesterday and the quick recovery.

I've got to keep regular contact with the vet over the next week with progress reports and then hopefully see the specialist next week. I'm lucky that I have a really good vet practice as we're getting quite regular visitors at the moment. A nice touch yesterday was they gave Yogi a Get Well Soon card.

I'm very glad to hear that things are looking up for Yogi and therefore you! I hope his recovery is speedy and that a diagnosis will come very soon so that he can be feeling 100% again.

I missed this thread somehow. Good greif! Poor Yogi! :eek2: That's a lot of stuff to have going on all at once!

I'm glad Yogi is starting to feel better. :biggrin2:

Isn't diarrhea, blood and weight loose also a symptom of a parasite infestation? I just want to make sure he is still being treated for roundworms, tapeworms and coccidia, which you said he has in your first post.

Yes it is, and he is continuing the treatement for this as it is an issue, but the vet suspects it is a side issue rather than the direct cause. Yesterday's horror was definitly due to Yogi straining to pass a large mass of impacted faeces, which the vet didn't think he could have passed on his own. What they're trying to figure out now is what is the underlying issue. He indicated that while the parasites weren't helping matters, they would not cause such acute onset of problems and such swift resolution.

He's having the wormer to treat the tapeworm (and roundworm? I'm not sure if it does both given that it was a large herbivore rather than canine roundworm:confused2:) tonight. The coccidiosis is more difficult as the antibiotic which treats it can cause dry eye, which is something else Yogi has had issues with in the past, so the vet is a bit cautious about using it before speaking to the surgery which treated him at the time (an eye specialist).
