More Surgery for Checkers

Sending positive thoughts for Checkers!

My chihuahua had a grade 2 mast cell tumor on her leg and the vet couldn’t get clean margins because of the location. We did 8 chemo treatments and predinosone. That was about 8 years ago and she will be 14 later this year.

Fingers crossed for grade 1!

That is so good to hear, Randi, thanks. I've also read research on giving Benadryl daily to inhibit the histamine growth of these and will be exploring that. Checkers is just out of surgery and will be coming home later. We'll have the results by the end of the week. I'll be holding my breath!

My vet had me give benadryl before Gavin's mast cell surgery...He had clean margins. It was Grade I/II....only 6mm, felt like a bug bite!

Never thought about giving benedryl, but that makes total sense. Hope Checkers girl is feeling better today and you receive good report at the end of the week.

Thanks, everyone. The diagnosis came in late yesterday. The tumor was a Grade 2...not the diagnosis we were hoping for. However the pathologist report said it was "mild," so we're taking that as a positive. Neither my vet or his holistic vet who works with my dogs would recommend chemo for Checkers, so we will try a holistic approach of Benadryl, diet, and a herbal med the holistic doc has used with success.

Checkers recently had a full abdominal ultrasound and of course was totally opened up for the gallbladder surgery and her organs looked good for both, so we are hopeful. The surgeon did get clean margins around the tumor, which is also good.

A dear friend reminded me that Checkers doesn't know she's sick or has cancer, she is just living her life. We are the ones who worry about the future. I'm going to try to hold onto that and hope for the best. Please keep the prayers and good thoughts coming.

I am so sorry to hear this but it's at least good news that they got clean margins. It sounds as though it has not metastasized so hopefully her prognosis is good. Please keep us posted.
