My Anxious Shelties - Toby and Ginny - Updates on their Progress

If you look back through my threads I spent nine months trying to train him before putting him on medication. I also exhausted all natural options of treating his anxiety before medicating him. His anxiety was such that he wasn't able to make any improvement until I medicated him, then continued the training.

Sorry, I just could not look back over 9 months to see all the things you were doing, what you tried and worked, etc. And of course, some of thesse were on different threads! I wish I could remember everything, but sometimes I forget my ATM code when I'm standing at the cash. Unfortunately, the brain can sometimes only hold so much info.

Setbacks With Toby

Feeling extremely frustrated and backed into a corner. I've come to realize that Toby's days with my family may be numbered.

My vet never wanted Toby to be on fluoxetine (Prozac) long term and I wanted to try and wean Toby off of it at some point, to see if he still needed it. I believed that he probably would never be able to be without it but hoped that maybe he'd do ok on a lower dose eventually.

I'd been told that generic fluoxetine was MUCH cheaper than Reconcile, the veterinary form of fluoxetine that Toby was on. This was also really important to me since we're spending $75/month medicating Toby.

I was greatly distressed to find out that due to the strict regulations in Canada regarding prescription drugs, that generic fluoxetine is 3x as expensive than in the united states, making it only a few dollars cheaper than what he was already on. I cannot find a cheaper source that my vet will approve.

Even worse, its been only a few days since he started taking 10mg generic fluoxetine exclusively and he's already exhibiting worrying behavior.

Toby has had three full out panic attacks on his last two walks and a panick attack in the house.

The first time when a person let a door slam shut behind them. Toby has not startled at a door in ages, let alone gone into a full panic attack. Toby even saw the person and saw them open the door, which did not even slam loudly. Toby has not exhibited this type of behavior for approx. 6 months.

Toby then proceeded to have another panic attack, this time worse, when he heard someone using a staple gun or hammer. This is a sound he's familiar with and at the very most Toby should have only barked a few times, which would have been acceptable. Instead he had an anxiety attack, attempted to escape and yelped like he was in physical pain.

The next day he had a panic attack over a sign he saw that we walk by all the time. Again, he has not reacted from this sign for 6 months, when we first put him on Reconcile.

In addition, Toby has also begun lunging at other dogs and people when startled or over excited.

He's started barking at sounds again in our yard, is jumpy in the house and startling at random, every day noises and had a mild panick attack at a slight banging noise my husband made.

I've paid for two months worth of this medication because it was less expensive to buy it all at once. Now it looks as though I've wasted over $70.00 on medication I can't use AND we'll have to go back to the more expensive Reconcile. I'm not even sure that my vet will allow Toby to remain on Reconcile long term, as she's indicated she doesn't like the idea. :(

I just don't know what I'm going to do, we're struggling with the cost of his medication and our tight budget won't allow us to make much in the way of cutbacks. We're already living frugally and trying to get our house some much needed renovations, not to mention paying for my own medical bills.

I guess I made a mistake in adopting him. I took into consideration that we could pay for something like thyroid pills or even insulin, but I never expected to be paying almost $100/month for medication, especially for a young dog.

I don't want to lose him, Toby is a very important part of our family and giving him up will be like giving away child, but at this point we've spent a fortune of money we don't have on training, anti-anxiety supplements and vet bills.

The thought of giving up my sweet, goofy boy just breaks my heart, but I need to do what's best for him. I'm in contact with the sheltie rescue I adopted him from.

One more thing, I did learn about a homeopath in my area who will treat dogs so I'm going to look into seeing her. However I've tried homeopathic remedies on Toby for anxiety with limited excess so I'm not altogether hopeful. :(

Oh Melissa, my heart aches for you and Toby. I have always said that there comes a time when you know when you have done as much as you can. If you have to give him up after all that you have tried to do it will be a devastating blow but at least you will know that you did your best. Sometimes the past can't be undone especially in such a sensitive breed. They also can feed on our own emotional state creating a domino effect. If you are at all concerned about the new drug's effectiveness or cost, he might pick it up. Since we can't turn off our own rational concerns we can cause the dog more anxiousness. Case in point - we had a dog named Tardis. He was beautiful, sweet and usually brave. However, he was attacked at a show while he was still a puppy by a German Shepherd. A few years after the attack we were at a show in New York and our ring was right beside the shepherd ring. Two shepherds got into it while Tardis was being examined by the judge. He reacted by throwing himself backwards and was disqualified. I ended up having to pay a handler to take him before a panel to get him reinstated which he was easily. I, on the other hand, could never get him to stand for a judge again. In my head I was always worried it could happen again and he fed off of it. Even thought I told myself if wouldn't happen I knew it could. My daughter could show him since she was too young to even think or worry about it so she finished him as a Junior handler. I'm not saying this is the case with Toby because I am not there to see your interactions with your dogs. Only you can decide if there might be some element of this going on. In the meantime, know that I am thinking of you and support your decision whatever you do.

Good point, I'll have to think about whether this is the cause or not. Could definitely be at home, but I don't think so on walks. Walks are very positive for both of us and he tends to catch me off guard when he becomes reactive. I never know when he's going to do it so I'm not anticipating. I'm also not nervous or tense on walks, I'm usually in a pretty positive state of mind.

I just wish we qualified for some medical discount. The only other cost I can think of is finding a lower cost food. Again, something I REALLY hate to do but I don't see what else we can do. :(

Hmm, just realized I might be able to save approx. $30/month if I buy a bigger bag of dog every 6 weeks instead of every 3 weeks. Sounds silly, but this is such a HUGE relief that it makes me feel like crying. :o

Going to the pet food store after work to see what my options are and to verify this savings. Every cent counts these days...

I was just on my way to do chores and thought I would check to see if there was a reply from you. I have a friend that owns a Global Pet Food store. We were talking one day and she said how upset she had been earlier that day because one of her customers had come in feeling extremely guilty because he was going to have to get a less expensive food for his dog. He had lost his job and had tried for quite a while to maintain the status quo but was unable to do it any longer. She told him that reducing his cost of pet food was no different than reducing his costs for people food, which of course he had been doing, and to stop feeling guilty about having to make this choice. My friend was really upset that she might have played a part in this man's feeling of letting his dog down.
I can hear your emotions in every strike of the keyboard. I know you don't want to give up but are getting fried trying to figure out what to do. Please take care of you.

That would be great!!!

I don't know where I got $30/ month from, the savings isn't nearly that much. If I switch from Orijen to Acana the savings is between $14-16.

Ran out of time at the petfood store but will go back another night and inquire about different grain-free brands.

Thanks, this was very thoughtful of you.
