new member hello

More kangaroos than sheep here! I have just brought a new camcorder so will be taking it on our walks to get a shot of the roo herding. Mind you with Tully around, poor Deska tries to herd them into a circle then Tully chases them out of the circle, so then he tries to herd her too. Its too funny. Although the behaviourist told me to stop him herding anything until I get his car herding under control.

Welcome to Sheltie nation! We have herders, cuddlers, runners, jumpers, lookers, loafers...just about any kind of Sheltie action you can imagine!

Welcome! I would love to see photos or video of Brea, especially herding. Phebe is 7 months old, and we haven't tried herding, yet, but I think she has a bit of instinct. She successfully retrieved a Labradoodle a couple of weeks ago.

lol - my dogs love herding cars and people! We have tried to get in to herding where I live but they wont let the shelties in - apparently they aren't sheepdogs!?! But my boy has such a natural instinct and is so good at it, he is the only dog I know who can round up kangaroos! I would sooo love to do herding, just to see a sheltie rounding on a sheep would be poetry, they are so elegant!

maybe you could start a new club "Roo Herding" no Australian shepherds allowed

Welcome to the forum! I love reading about herding dogs and it's really fantastic that you've been able to nurture this instinct.

What?? Shelties (more formerly, Shetland Sheepdogs) aren't sheepdogs? Now that's the strangest thing I've heard... Oh, except for you keep mentioning herding roos and I want to see it!!!!

Nice to meet you Bonnie Brea! I have had shelties for about 30 years, too.
I haven't gotten into herding, but my favorite sheltie used to herd the cats for me. I used to raise Show Cats, and if they get outside get into a fight, you can lose points if there are scars on your cats. I tried to keep them in the house, but they got out one evening. I was chasing them around in the backyard, but my sheltie kept getting in the way. Finally I said "Fine, you catch them." I stood back and watched my untrained sheltie circle them in and head for the back door. I ran to the door & opened it up, and Crystal herded them into the house. Crystal, my favorite sheltie, never let the cats get outside again.

Crystal has been at Rainbow Bridge for about 10 years. My current sheltie is Buddy, a 9 month old boy.

Welcome!! We love pictures and can't wait to hear more about your herding experiences.

I loved your cat herding story. I have a few myself we just got chickens and Brea has taken charge keeps them in line pretty funny chickens are kind of dumb and one of them challenges Brea and it gets to be a standoff pretty funny, but he has taken this job on loves it. We just have a good laugh. I am soo happy I found this forum:winkgrin:Everyone here understands my love for this breed and I see you have had Shelties around for awhile. My children my grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been raised around this breed and it has been a joy seeing how great shelties are around children. Right now I haven't a clue how to post pictures on here. My computer skills are limited as soon as I figure it out I will post a picture. any help with this would be appreciated:yes:
