An update on Moonshine. I’ll start with the less than pleasing news:
I have Saturdays off at work, so I went up to see him at about 10pm. I had gotten a phone call updating earlier and was told he wasn’t so interested in food today. The results on the fecal we had sent out had come back also and he is positive for Giardia. When I went to see him today I found out his food had been pulled for the next 12 hours due to two episodes of vomiting. He was having his fluid rate cut down and unfortunately because the anti-emetic is given through IV at a constant rate of infusion this served to upset his stomach.
More Pleasing News:
His stools are now solid. He’s not too dehydrated. He’s still very alert also. To put in perspective for anyone who hasn’t dealt with Parvo yet at this point if the owner was unable to keep him hospitalized Moonshine would be okay to go home, however at home care would mean me giving him his medications through SQ injections which takes longer to hit the system than IV. So thankfully I’m able to keep him in the hospital for a bit longer to make 100% sure he’ll be okay. I’m doing the happy dance about employee discounts and payment plans here lol.
As far as myself, I feel like I’m in a better place now with treating him. I was and am still angry at the lack of responsibility the “breeder” used. I have known good breeders my Aussies were both from the same excellent woman. I have also seen many puppy mill and puppies from backyard breeders, it’s just very sad to see it firsthand. I haven’t ever been one to believe in ‘meant-to-be’ type deals, but I can’t imagine what else would have brought me to Moonshine. When I took him in to test he was basically showing no symptoms…most people including some of the other techs I work with would have assumed it was a bout of diarrhea due to change in diet. (Pet pride no thanks) So I’m feeling better about it. Yes it’s a lot of expenses treating giardia on top of parvo with hospitalization, but I made the commitment the second I saw the pup.
