New Sheltie owners here!

Hello! My hubby and I just brought our little Duncan home yesterday! How old is Daphne? I love that name, it is very sweet. And unlike Frasier, you won't have to ask Daphne to get the door - she'll probably beat you there!

Those are some really cute pics. My DH doesn't want me posting pictures of him taking a nap with our furbug, but I may have to sneak one in sometime. We also have a Papillon named Pierre and three kitties (I guess the siggy gives that away, huh?).

Daphne and Duncan look a bit alike. We will definitely have to compare stories as they grow (and share solutions to Sheltie-issues). How is she at night? We are crating Duncan and he whined for an agonizing 5-7 minutes and then settled down for almost eight hours of sleep. I was very pleased. With Pierre, the crating at night only lasted about two weeks before he was allowed into the bed, but we got him at ten weeks, not eight.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. Everyone is so great here, and they have lots of great answers to all your Sheltie questions!

That name Duncan is really cute too. Daphne and Duncan would become fast friends, I'm sure.

Nighttime was actually a surprise. It's been a lonnng time since I've had a puppy, so I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I had mainly heard that I should be ready to be up every hour or so with her if I crated her. However, it wasn't really the case. With Daphne, we introduced her to her crate right away, and she fell asleep immediately with her head on her water dish (so adorable!).

Afterwards, once she'd spent some time away from the crate after her nap, she was more reluctant to go into it. Luckily, Matty remembered that he had a stuffed animal from when he was a kid that looked a lot like a Sheltie, and we put it in the cage, and put a blanket over the top of the cage. That night, she fell right asleep and slept until around five in the morning. The last two nights, she whines for a few minutes until she finally settles in like the good girl she is.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments, and thanks for the book reccomendation ronjantetrault

I did the same with my pups! I raided our storage bins for old stuffed toys I didn't have too strong of feelings for (some things I wouldn't be able to bear watching them get ripped up or chewed on). Pierre got my Cat in the Hat toy and a little Eeyore. For Duncan, I gave him little stuffed kitties and bought him a Sock Monkey (because it was bigger).

Covering the crate really helps! It says good night very quickly.

How is housetraining going so far?

Welcome to the forum. Daphne is a cute little girl. I love the name too, it suits her quite well. In my opinion, raising shelties is great. I've not had major issues raising them and you'll find that training them is also fairly easy as they like to please their owners.

Welcome to the forum! Don't hesitate to ask if you've any questions! We LOVE to talk about our Sheltie experiences here....even if you don't ask for it! :wink2:

She's a pretty pup and that's a nice photo of her and Matty.

Housetraining is going well too. She's had a few near misses where she starts to squat in the house, but Matty and I are diligent and one of us always has our eyes on her, so we've always caught her. She goes to the bathroom the second she's out of her crate, and again right after she's eaten, and it seems to work wonders as she goes potty everytime.

Yeah Matty loves that picture. I don't have any nearly as nice with her yet. D:

Welcome to the Forum, Bentley and Matty. Your little Daphne is a beautiful sweet pup. And it sounds as though you guys have everything under control, especially the "don't take your eyes off the pup" school of housebreaking.:uhoh: And speaking of stuffed animals, I have a sable boy (Spencer) and he slept with Winnie the Pooh for quite some time. Then he realized he could sleep with one or more of the cats (his cats) and they'd cuddle up with him unlike Winnie.
