Older sheltie wants nothing to do with new sheltie puppy

I looked, but I can't tell if it is illegal in Arkansas or not. With all the ads in the paper boasting six week old puppies it must not be illegal. :uhoh::confused2:
 
Cripes! That is WAY too young for the puppy leave its mom and littermates. Your older Sheltie is probably afraid to interact with a puppy that young. I would definitely wait a little while for the puppy to get a bit older, and for Penny to get used to her. It will happen in time.

I would agree. It could be that Penny is being cautious. Give it a few more weeks, and don't force it. Perhaps get them interacting informally. Get down on the floor and just sit there, let the pups come to you, sniff around, sniff each other.

Then when the baby has matured a little more, you can start trying games. Start with ones that Penny already likes. They may never be best buds, but they'll get along fine!

(Years ago, I had a cat and I decided that she really needed a playmate. Well, it never happened. They co-existed, and sometimes they would share a couch but they never played together. )

Nope, not illegal in Arkansas. Or Michigan for breeders to sell them that young. And it should be.
 
Dumb question. At 5-6 weeks is there any chance he sees her as Mom and has give nursing a try? I would think if that happened she would be a bit stand offish.

I agree. I don't think it is illegal in Texas either. I live on the Texas line, and the newspaper I get is for both Arkansas and Texas (since people from both states live in the area). There are puppies from Texas advertised as being "ready" at six weeks.

Nah he hasn't tried biting anything underneath, besides she is fixed so she probably couldn't produce milk anyway. He seems to like puppy food anyways. Today we took him for his first Vet checkup with our vet and he's gone from 2.5 pounds when we got him to 3.8 pounds in 5 days! So they really must grow quickly. He was the runt of the litter.
 
That sure is way to young to be taken away from the mom. Did she not have anyone to help her out with the mom and puppies?

I don't think every breeder follows the 8 week rule. In fact all my sheltie's and my previous dogs pomeranian's were 6 weeks I think.
