One of my biggest fears ocurred today on our walk

How scary to have that happen and as far as you know the dog could of been friendly but you just never know. Years ago when Katie was a puppy I took her for a walk around our block and came back and got Maggie and took her. We got half way around and a young pit bull came running after us....it could of been coming for play but I was not sure and knowing the boys that owned it I am sure they were not raising it to be a nice dog.
I was scared to death... I picked up Maggie and ran to a strange house and rang the door bell, they let me and he chased the dog away and after I calmed down I went home. Next time I walked Maggie past that house she kept looking over her shoulder. There is a leash law in our town and neighborhood but some people still walk their dogs unleashed. Sometimes the dogs are not good nor the owners and you can't always tell till it could be to late.

I actually have had it happen before several years ago with my first shelie, Shadow. I frequantly walked him through the neighborhood for exercise for me and him both. One day it happened... we walked past this house and from the side yard this Boxer came flying toward us and jumped on Shadow and began tearing him up. I started yelling and beating the back of that Boxer as hard as I could to no avail... he would not stop. I had a vision flash before my eyes that right here in front of me this Boxer is going to kill my dog. I made a quick choice... I reached down and grabbed Shadow's collar to pick him up... Shadow extinctavly grabbed my hand in his teeth... and kept on grinding down as hard as he could. In his mind he finally had a hold of that Boxer... who was still in the process of chewing on my boy. I told Shadow "let go of my hand.". I saw his eyes go to my face and never before have I seen a look of reconization go through a dogs eyes that way... It was like, oh it's you, and he immediatly let go. I quickly finished the process of grabbing his collar picked him up and started running. I had a thought what if that now attacks me now that I'm holding Shadow. But he just stood there watching us. It was an agonizing walk home. Here I didn't know how badly Shadow was hurt. I noticed as I was walking up toward home that blood was pooling over my hand and dripping on the road. For a moment I was scared it was Shadow, then I realized it wad me... where Shadow had chewed on me. Well, I got ourselves home and washed and bandaged my hand then rushed Shadow to the vet. Where we had a good $200 vet bill. Shadow healed fine thank goodness, but we both still bare physical and mental scars from that experience. The guy who owned the Boxer did pay for vet expenses and he kept his dog in a fence for a couple of weeks, but after that I did see it on ocassion roaming the streets again. The dog died about a year later and as much as I loved dogs... I didn't shed tears over that one. I never walked my dogs around the neighborhood again.

How AWFUL!!!!
Thank goodness you both were okay, Karen

Sorry to hear you had a scary experience, but like Toffee's mom, I was unclear from your first post whether the dog actually appeared aggressive or whether it was just running up to play?

Owning a big dog I know they can seem scary if they run up, but on the whole they are not attacking just playing.

I've known some very very nice bull terriers, very friendly and sociable. In fact I am more comfortable with them than BCs or JRTs as Cadbury has been attacked by them for no reason.

Personally, if someone pepper sprayed Cadbury for running up to their dog, especially if he had already nicely greeted the dog and both had been ok, I would be upset.

If he HAD attacked, then by all means defend your dog, but it does sound like he was just being playful - unless I have missed somehing from your first post, in which case I apologise.
When I saw it was a Pitbull I became nervous- then when the guy said "take it easy" to the dog I got scared. The Pitbull was fine, but those dogs are all over the news. It is a grim reality here-many Pitbulls terrorize other dogs and kids, and have killed them. I hate to feel that way, but it's a fact. BTW, We will be in London on Tuesday!!!

Ooooh, how exciting and we are having nice weather here, sunny and hot, so fingers crossed it will last for you!
It will be in the 90's here and very humid, so we are looking forward to the trip! We just don't want to leave Sandstorm!!
