Our 14 week old puppy broke her left back leg :(

I'm very sorry to hear about your puppy! I hope the surgery goes well and she's OK.

One suggestion: If you don't have one, you will need to get a crate. It should be big enough for her to stand up, turn around and lay down in at least. You'll need it to confine her while she heals. If you haven't crated her up till now, she will object, but it's the safest place for her while her leg heals. It will also keep her from over-exercising the other leg.

I'd recommend a wire crate rather than a soft crate (which she can chew) or a plastic crate which she can't see through well. A wire crate can be covered at night with a sheet or blanket to help her sleep but during the day at least she can easily see you and what goes on in the house.

Your puppy will be groggy after the surgery, and they may give you some pain med for her initially when she comes home. But be prepared for her to want to be a puppy (read: active!) when she feels better. This is when you'll want to be able to confine her and limit her to simple games that will occupy her without using the leg.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

Oh my.....how awful! Maybe call the vet to see if they can give her more pain meds till tomorrow?? Poor lil girl, hope she heals quickly....

I agree--I would probably call the vet. If nothing else you'll have peace of mind that she's okay and can wait until tomorrow. But I'm thinking they could give you something for her if she's still hurting.

Hang in there! My mom's dog broke his leg when he was young and he healed 100%!

Thanks for the replies!

It's 5am here I don't think I can call the vet :(
She will have to wait 8 hours till te surgery! She's only in pain when she tries to turn or move or get up. Otherwise , she's sleeping like a baby

We have a crate but she hates it there! Right now she's just in my office sleeping on a bunch of towels/ blankets . I would love to crate her but when I tried she cried in pain from moving around and trying to stand up ! I have to hold her down when it starts hurtin. Her other back leg is kinda weak and I don't want anything to happen to it ( especially break) when she freaks out from the pain and tries to run off !

I just hope the surgery fixes her! I don't like seeing her this way. Very depresssing

8 hours till surgery!

Is there perhaps an ER vet hospital you can call or take her to to get pain meds from?

I'm so sorry that she is going through such pain!

Did the vet have anything to say about how a simple fall could cause a leg break? Have they suggested any additional testing to test her bone density or anything?

I've seen my dogs do some pretty scary acrobatic moves off decks, leaping over logs and brush and whatnot, and have been sure that they injured something - only to have them limp for a few minutes and then come back roaring again minutes later.

But a simple jump up and tumble? That makes no sense to me. I would consider delving down on this further once the initial surgery is done. My tuppence worth.

I'm not totally disagreeing with you here, Barb, but it could have just been a freak accident. My mom's dog jumped off the couch and broke his leg. No idea how/why/what happened, just unlucky. Although unusual, it's entirely possible.

Barb,

They didn't suggest any extra testing ! They just said its fairly common for puppies to break legs on slippery floors! I didn't see 100% what happened to her . I looked away for a brief millisecond and when I looked back she yelled and cried really loud and rolled onto her back ! Mguesses is that she slipped and tripped against a close by furniture when she tried to jump up / stand on her back legs for a treat and twisted the leg somehow! She was excited At that time. It broke at the thinnest part of the calf section bone closer to the middle!

I know dogs can do all kinds of agility trick and jumping around but she is just a 14 week old puppie! She doesn't even go out for walks or play in a back yard yet because she's still in the process of getting vaccinated! Most of what she does in the apt is play fetch , tug of war , herding my legs and sleep. Perhaps the lack of going out for walks and playing with other dogs has made her a bit weak physique wise. In any case it's quite possible she got her leg stuck and jumped in excitement for the treat and broke her leg. Im just not 100% sure how it happened .

2 hours before I leave for the vet!!
