Our Sketchie boy, cancer/amputation

Great picture, Trini, and what a great idea!! I'll have to try that in my dog yard for my herd. Bet they'll love it!

It's great to see Sketchie looking so good and enjoying life! :hugs

Sketch looks well balanced on his 3 legs. As for Mickey, he really is big - I'd love to see the face that goes with that fluff-butt!

Sharon, Sketchie really does balance well. It is interesting to watch him move...if he is walking slowly the hobble motion is very obvious...but the few times in the last couple of days when he has done a short run his movement smooths out. In fact, watching him run when you are on his side that still has a rear leg you wouldn't immediately pick up that he is missing a leg. I don't know if slow movement will smooth out somewhat in time, but I suspect it will always have some level of limp/hobble. But as long as he is not in pain and is happy that is all that matters to me.

Here is the face that goes with that fluff-butt. Mickey is 2/3 the size of Dakota (lying behind him) who is a 24lb Shelite.

Thanks, Ann, Cindy, RikyR and Julia...yes... it is wonderful to see Sketchie taking pleasure in the things he has always loved. It brings me peace that we made the right decision for our big blue boy. :smile2:

I know this has been a terribly draining month for you.

But I amazed at how much things have changed and improved in that short time! And I know Sketchie would not be where he is without all your love and care. You are a very devoted Fur-Mum.

Oh boy, cute and trouble with a capital T is what I see! What a little fox-face. Dakota is handsome too, I remember you rescued him along with Dante, right?
You sure have a house-full. I do have such a soft spot for Poms. We've had several at our shelter and they are just such characters. :wink2:

Tell Sketchie to keep up the good work. It really is a happy ending.

I haven't been on Sheltie Nation in a while... just logged to see what is new and came across your touching story about Sketch. I can only imagine how emotional this has been for you as a "sheltie mom!" Like the others who posted before me, I am happy to hear that Sketch is doing as well as he is and wish him all the best. It seems so unfair he is having to go through this at six years old, but on the flip side, being younger and stronger may help him recover better. Since I am still fairly new to SN, I did a search and saw on your original post to SN that Sketch was close to starvation when you got him. It sounds like this hasn't been his first struggle in life. Was Sketch a rescue? I am a firm believer that dogs find their way into our lives for a reason, and it seems obvious that the reason Sketch is with you now is because you are who he needs during this time.... and also who he needed when you first got him. He has been a trooper and is an inspiration! When I hear stories like this one of animals having to overcome so much and being so strong through it all, it really brings things into perspective and helps me realize that my "bad days" really aren't that bad. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and Sketch. I hope Sketch has many happy and fun-filled years still ahead of him!

Thank-you, Page. Yes, Sketch was a rescue from a not good situation. I am always humbled by how these gentle souls take whatever life hands them and can still trust and love. These past 3 weeks post amp have had their down moments when he seems confused that his body doesn't work quite like it used to, but on the whole Sketchie is adjusting very well and hopefully will go on to have many happy years ahead. And, thankfully, the rest of our crew has accepted the "new" Sketchie without issue.

.

 Yup...our wee Mick Man is fully of mischief...but he is a total sweetie.

Good memory on your part...Dakota did come into Tri-State with Dante...they were a bonded pair and we had promised their previous owner that they wouldn't be separated. Dakota is a quiet Sheltie, but wee Dante is a typical full of it Pommie whose bark is as loud as a 60lb dog...and he loves to bark!!

E-collar free!!!! :)

4 weeks post amp surgery, Sketchie is finally E-collar free! Yesterday was a trial day (we had done several previous trial days without luck) and he only tried to lick the incision area a couple of times and stopped immediately when I said "no, no, Sketchie"...so last night he got to go to bed without the collar and he was one very happy doggie.

One more milestone in his 3 legged journey. :smile2:
