Speaking of Barkley, the poor little guy is jinxed too. After a month on Doxycylene for Lyme disease, he began limping again last week on the same leg he was gimpy on when he was diagnosed with Lyme. So tomorrow he goes in for xrays to rule out orthopedic issues. If his leg is OK, he'll go back on the antibiotic for a run of six to eight weeks. I feel so bad for him...this after I butchered his nail! :no:

Poor Barkley! I hope he's ok. Let me know what they say is wrong. I hope it's not a joint issue. You know, Zoe has been limping on her right front leg for a few months and I took her in and the vet said it's arthritis already, she's only 6 1/2! They gave me some glucose chewables for her to take every day and I have been trying not to let her jump off of the couches. I think that really aggrivates it.
 
Thanks for the good thoughts, Shaun. Barkley is at the vet's now and of course I am a nervous wreck since they have to put him to sleep to do xrays. He is not even two yet but is SUCH a jumper on his hind legs (he can reach my kitchen counters easily!) that it's no wonder he's had hind leg issues. I've had him on glucosamine/condritin supplements since last fall when he was lame on his other hind leg. :uhoh:

I'll update later when I've got him home and know what the verdict is. I'm also going to move this post to Health since it fits better there.
 
Our peticure came today :smile2:- only 22 days. not as bad as I thought it would be- actually less time than the 4-6 weeks it said on the website. we'll keep you posted on how it goes.
 
Update on peticure.

Well both of my dogs are doing well with the peticure !! :yes: Hooray !! No more nicking and flying nail bits.:uhoh: I don't even need treats anymore they took to it very well just took appr. 2 times and thats it now they are acclimated to it.:yes:
 
Glad to hear that it is working so well. Hmmmm, no more flying nail bits, I may have to consider getting one. I hate having to run the sweeper everytime I trim their nails!! :biggrin2:
 
I have to ask: What is Peticure?

My pup is almost 16 weeks and so far I've been trimming is nails with baby nail clippers.

It's kinda going ok, but I have to wait for him to be practically comatose before I even try...by that time, I'm usually almost comatose too! :-)

But he's growing so fast that the baby nail clippers won't work for much longer. There are several types of nail clippers out there: the guillotine and the regular sideways clip. What do you all recommend?

I want to stay on top of his nails. I made the mistake with my 12 year old who recently died by not trimming often enough...and the quick grew so long that it was impossible to ever get the nails short enough again. I really messed up on that poor boy. Won't do it again!
 
Peticure has a website (http://www.peticure.com/) that you can learn all about it. Basically, they say all types of clippers damage the nail/cause pain and their fancy tool won't do that. It is basically a dremel tool- variable speed with an attachment- kind of a little sandpaper ring that is inside a guard with various size holes for different size nails and you just grind a little nail away at a time. I only just got mine and am still getting the dogs used to it so haven't had much success yet- they don't mind the noise when it's not right next to them. We're working up to getting it right next to them so we can start actually working on the nails.
Animal Planet has been running the commercials which is where I first saw it.

Like Calliesmom Said, its the same as a Dremel, also known as a rotary tool only this one has a special guard on it that helps with the mess.

Its a great alternative to clipping nails, I myself now use my husband's Dremel and have had a lot of success. If you look further back in this thread there is a lot of information regarding the Peticure and using a Dremel tool.

The sound is a bit intimidating for dogs at first but with some work they usually get used to it. Lots of really good treats and praise for getting near it helps a great deal. Sadie was particularly good, it really only took her two to three days to get used to it.
 
Peticure Arrived Today

Mine just came today, and I've tried it out on Sparky and it works well.

The directions for putting it together are strictly from Hades, as a couple of parts shown in the directions didn't match up to the unit I had, but I figured it out.

I used the Peticure on a low speed and didn't do a whole lot to Sparky's nails, but he was a lot calmer, albeit the noise.

Disco, for some reason, was suspicious of the Peticure and while I was putting it together, he decided the best place to hide was under the bed! How do they know something is going to be "done" to them? LOL!
 
OK - I think I'm going to look into ordering the Peticure.

I guess it's probably expensive, but hey, I've spent money on useless things in the past before, why not try it again (don't we all have that piece of clothing that we thought would be great, but never got off the hanger once home?

And anything is cheaper than at trip to the groomers!

As follow up to the Furminator discussion on another discussion thread, I think I might just get one of those too.
