Poop Eating

gonna try this for Savannah

Kaleigh and my others never showed an interest that I noticed, but Savannah has, so I wanna curb this if possible. The Dog Listener suggests adding pineapple or zucchini to their food...gonna try that once I get to the grocery store (don't have either on hand). Savannah puts everything in her mouth, so I think it is just something more to try out. I do hope she STOPS this grossness.

I have no idea why, but Hanna just stopped eating poop on her own. Maybe it was the change in her diet? We were pretty religious about picking it up immediately for most of that first year. We still try to get it everyday but she does leave it alone now if we forget.

She also has no interest in the kitty litter, thank goodness, but I still keep that in the laundry room with the pocket door mostly closed just in case. Nothing more gross than having to peel off a litter covered cat poo from the roof of your doggies' mouth!

Cute as puppies are I'm so happy that we're past the 1.5 year mark and I now have a puppy that I can trust ( mostly).

As soon as I read the pineapple/zucchini additive trick to stop dogs from eating poop, I immediately went to the net to look for more information. I found a number of sources that provided similar sentiments, and a few that suggested that spinach and pureed pumpkin might provide the same effect.

NOW - folks - it isn't that I doubt the veracity of these suggestions - it's just that - how should I put this????? I'm just struggling to wrap my brain around the possibility that one of our beloved pets, would gleefully scarf down dog poop (his/her own or other's digestive products), goose poop, rabbit poop or even cat poop rolled in kitty litter - YET, their discerning palates are such that they would turn up their noses at poop that contained spinach, zucchini, pumpkin or pineapple. I just can't reconcile the logic of that idea in my Midwestern, country boy, pea brain. Like I said, it's not that I disbelieve the veracity of the comments, I just can't stretch my consciousness far enough to UNDERSTAND it.

My guys love raw spinach and eat it as a treat...same with cut up chunks of zucchini and pumpkin. When I tried pineapple I had to mix in with their food as they wouldn't eat it plain...but my experience has been that none of these food have any effect in the fight against poop eating. Only my shelties are dedicated poop "search and rescue" dogs ....they literally do grid searches of the yard looking for even one tiny piece I might have missed when doing cleanup. Thankfully my pommies and my collie have no interest in eating poop.

Actually, there is a logic to it - at least for the pineapple.
If you go to the Pet Store to buy anti-coprophagy meds (Forbid, Deter etc.) you will see that they are vegetable dyes that are virtually tasteless when eaten, but when digested, form compounds which make the stool noxious to dogs. Pineapple apparently contains large amounts of these dyes. A wedge of pineapple in the food actually does help in a third to a half of cases, speaking anecdotally from my experience.

(Old joke - the pineapple makes the stool taste like cr…… oh wait, that wouldn't help at all.)

Well fortunately we were off with thinking that Lacey is eating poop. We have been cleaning up and watching her very carefully and she has not been eating either hers or Milo's poop. Just the cat poop. Still yuck though!!

I really DO get the logic of the use of these substances to potentially make the END result (pun intended) "noxious" to dogs as you put it. I'm just having a bit of an issue putting it all in perspective. What we are in effect saying is: (A). Our faithful companions are eating cr** off of the ground. (B). We want them to STOP eating cr** off of the ground so we are going to add edible substances to their food, so that, (C). the resulting cr** on the ground will TASTE like WORSE cr** on the ground and they will (D). NOW stop eating cr** off of the ground! Not only does the entire conversation of poop eating dogs strike me as hilarious (or more to the point, the amount of our time the conversation, with good reason, occupies), but I am amazed at how universal the problem is. Since my one and only Sheltie never had this issue, I had NO idea until I came here how big an issue this is.

so folks, my monsters got pineapple this morning...both LOVED it by the way...and once it has gotten through, so to speak, we shall see. I figure can't hurt right? and I will post after we get through a few days. It is a GOOFY topic, but also a disgusting one, ha.

I have one of these too...she is relentless in her search to the point that I now go out with a flashlight in the dark to try and pick it up before she can get to it. Interestingly enough, it's only Pixie's poop she wants....and Pixie doesn't eat anything different than the other four. Go figure.

I've tried the pineapple, but only the pineapple/cottage cheese. I may have to try a spoonful of regular pineapple. I would love to find a deterrent. I'm a crazy woman with the scooper out there!!

I have always tried to be diligent of getting it up pronto, don't want to have stepping issues, and don't want flies in warmer weather. I want to smell my flowers, not stinky stuff.
