Poor Poopy Bela

Bela's doing better. I've put her up on the bed beside me (day after chemo - ugh!). She's being really clingy and wants to be petted, I guess because she's still not feeling up to snuff.

I looked through the new bag of dog food I opened yesterday, and it seems to be OK by sight and smell. I am almost ashamed to admit I feed my dogs grocery store dog food (IAMS dry kibble) when I see everyone feeding these ultra premium brands. I always fed my boys either IAMS, Eukanuba, Bil-Jac (fresh frozen & dry), or Pedigree. Plus, things have gotten very tight money-wise, so I'm having to cut corners. I just hope I haven't sacrificed Bela's health because of it.

I opened a can of pumpkin to give Bela a little, and found it had had a hole in the can and had developed some really nasty mold. Yuck! So I guess it'll have to wait.

But she is feeling better, that's a blessing!

Oh, forgot to mention - I had given her and Gracie both a few pieces of peppermint candy yesterday (I use it to ward off G-I side effects of the chemo) and they snorted it down like it was crack! Could this have made Bela ill? Maybe I gave her too much. I've given my dogs little bits of plain peppermint hard candy for years with no problems. You haven't lived until you've had peppermint-tinged bad doggie breath breathed on you.

Oh I am so glad Bela is feeling better!! Your love, care, time and her quality of life you give her are just as important if not more then the brand of food you feed!

Apparently a canine flu is going on all over the country.. Toby received his rabies vaccination today and there was all kinds of talk about it and the flu shot!

Happy to hear Bella is feeling better and praying you'll feel better soon as well.

The candy wasn't sugar free by any chance was it? Also it could be the new bag of food.

Hoping for a speedy recovery Bella! Mommy loves you so much, don't let her worry :) I agree, doesn't matter what brand of food, it is clear you love her so much and do everything you could do for her <3

I might have to try your remedy for doggie breath!

and don't worry about the food. All bella needs is your love :D and if she's clingy she needs it even more!

I had a really hard time finding canned pumpkin a while back, and used sweet potatoes instead. I just baked up a few and scooped out the innards, that went in the fridge and I added a tbsp every meal. Gavin has a sensitive tummy (vibrant pets has helped) so I watch his diet carefully. anything new or different can set him off, poor guy.

Those are not sugar free peppermints are they? I think Dawn asked and I wonder also. Gotta beware of xyitol in sugar free stuff it can make our pups sick.

Harper gets sweet potatos every day as part of her overall diet. She loves sweets.

Jaynie, prayers are coming at you for your difficult chemo challenges. Much support.

If this is a one-time occurrence, I wouldn't worry much. But I would encourage you not to feed your dogs "people treats". I doubt a couple of little candies could have set her off so much, but who knows?

I do recall that as my forever pup, Timber, got older he would have bouts of diarrehea with apparently no cause....then disappear again for weeks.

Good luck and glad she seems to be doing abit better today.

Don't worry about what brand of food you are feeding. I have a friend that has one of the top winning beardies of all time and she feeds Pedigree. Her dogs live forever and never get sick!

Watch any sugar free treats for you or your dog. Can cause nasty diareahha.

She might be stressed because of your illness. Both Rhi and Phoebe did the nasty on the floor when Dave was in hospital. Sensitive to our moods, dogs do stress easier than one might imagine and shelties have it down to a science!

Healing thoughts to you both. You will be in our thoughts.

To put everyone's mind at rest, I do not allow sugar-free peppermints in my home at any time (they just taste NASTY). LOL

Bela is doing MUCH better and was back to her old self this morning. We've been having a LOT of wind here today, and when I took her out this morning, she was quite put out by the fact that all her fur was being blown backwards. She refused to pee, so I turned her around to face the wind, and suddenly the light bulb went off in her little head, and she did her thing. It was so funny - Neechee did the very same thing - he was so small as a puppy that when he started lifting his leg to pee, it would literally blow him over, so he always tried to face into the wind after that. Picky, picky Shelties!

Thanks for the good wishes about my chemo. It's truly a very light dose, but it still makes me not feel very well. Only 1cc of methotrexate injected every Wednesday night. This is the medication that has been in all the news about becoming very scarce. Fortunately, I haven't had that problem yet, but I'm afraid I might have to switch back to the oral form, and not be able to keep anything down (including most of the pills) for most of the week. I am taking it (and several other nasty things) for rheumatoid disease.

My dogs (but especially Bela) make my life so much happier just by having them beside me. I can't do very much these days, and they are excellent company. Bela follows me closely all around the house (except the kitchen where the noisy dishwasher monster lives) and wherever I am at, she wants to be.

I've started Bela back on the IAMS food (we've got very little food of any kind in the house this week) and she seems to be perfectly normal. I think I may have fed her too much of the peppermint. I won't make that mistake again - little things like that really seem to set her off. Of course, she ADORED the peppermint. <sigh> So I guess I'll have to run into the kitchen to have a bite, then run back. I somehow don't think that will faze her - she's no fool.
