Prayers for Shilo

Poor girl did not eat anything last night, despite my attempts. I got her some baby food today, so I will see if she will lick that off a spoon. She is now throwing up also, which I believe is because of nothing in her stomache. She doesn't go back to the vet until the 10th. Thank you for the ideas! They are much appreciated.

I would consider calling the vet and letting them know that she is still throwing up. They might want to see her before the 10th, and or suggest something for the nausea. (plus throwing up can cause dehydration)

ps Continuous prayers going out for Shilo and you.

Hugs to Shilo!

I must ask though what tests they did to diagnosis kidney disease. It is not a simple diagnosis and often requires lots of bloodwork and/or ultrasounds and biopsies. And specifically, what do they mean by kidney disease. That's very broad.

It seems to me that they came up with this diagnosis a little too quickly. And also, how old is Shilo again?

I would be considering a second opinion at this point. This kind of diagnosis is too big to accept with one vet visit.

Trust me, I share your pain. I'm dealing with this Bacca and his liver.

I am so very sorry to hear your little Shilo is so sick. I know how heartbreaking it is to go through something like this. When my sweet little Vickie really gave up eating, we resorted to an ice cream cone (vanilla) and after a little hesitation, she started on that and her appetite was back. I know this probably isn't what the vet would suggest, but in my opinion, if my dog isn't eating anything she should, then I will try everything I can think of to let her eat. Shilo needs SOMETHING in his stomach. Is he drinking water?

I agree: I'd call the vet right away too. Maybe a specialist vet (internal medicine) too. I am sending my prayers for Shilo and you along with hugs and kisses for Shilo.:hugs

How is Shilo today? You might try giving some ice cubes to lick to help with hydration.

Thinking about you and your little Shilo.

Hugs,

Hello!

My prayers also for your shilo.
The only thhing I heard of to help weak dogs is gelee royal, which is very rich and motivates eating.
But you have to first test with very little because it is from bees and some react allergic. I am sure you can ask your vet of using it.

:hugs

Hi, I'm sorry that Shilo is ill. My Piper (who is only 2) was born with congenital Kidney disease. I am not a vet but I have taken Piper to a specialist.

One of the main reasons that animals with kidney disease will not eat is an upset stomach. When my cats had kidney disease the vet had me give them famotidine (pepcid AC).

HOWEVER, the specialist told me that in the last 2 years research has shown that cats and dogs don't metabolize famotidine like humans do so she recommended 10 mg of omaprazole (Prilosec). It really helped Piper; her appetite returned.

However there is one catch. The over the counter Prilosec is 20 mg and the tablets are not scored and therefore can not be split accurately. I can't even begin to describe the warning I got from the specialist not to split those pills. Instead she wrote me a prescription for 10 mg omaprazole capsules.

This is Piper's daily medical routine:

Royal Canine LP (low protein) - canned food (of all the kidney diets Royal Canine is alleged to be the most palatable) and one teaspoon of Cesar Sunrise Canine Cuisine Smoked Bacon and Egg Wet Dog Food b/c she is a bacon fanatic. My thought was that our sense of smell is very important to how we perceive food and dogs have a much more keen sense of smell (but interestingly less taste buds) so Piper thinks she is getting the good stuff without me risking her kidney on food that is high protein. :smile2:

10 mg of omaprazole (give in the morning and wait one hour before feeding)

100 ml SubQ fluid

Azodyl (Kidney supplement) 2 in the morning and 1 in the evening

Crananidin (Urinary tract supplement) 1 per day

Again, I am not a vet just a loving sheltie parent who takes one day at a time.

Wishing you and Shilo the very best!
Kimberly

I would certainly return to your vet! Most dogs in kidney failure are very nauseated so they turn their noses up at any food no matter how yummy. She may need a prescription diet, and you may need to give her fluids. The fluids are given under the skin and help flush the toxins out of her system which is what the kidneys are supposed to do, but aren't.

I'd be especially worried with vomiting and diarrhea. She can become dehydrated quickly and also have electrolyte imbalances.

Keeping you and Shilo in my thoughts.
