Chris,
I have a few questions if you could answer them? I was wondering how old your Shelties are? Was the PRP injections painful? Have either Layla or Bitsy had to have several injections or just the one? After doing more reading I was a bit concerned that my Missy, who will be 11 in a few month may be too old for the PRP to be helpful. Thank you.
I believe Bits ran around $600.
Bits and Layla were both 10. They were both sedated during the procedure (Layla was also having elbow surgery). I'd ask your vet. I don't think 11 is too late, but I don't know Missy's general health. We think it was worth every cent! Without it, Layla would have had to stop serving at Walter Reed and certainly couldn't have gone to Paris twice! And I firmly believe Bitsy could not have lived past 12 without it.
If you're anywhere near Baltimore, I know the world's leading canine orthopedist. Thanks Chris for your reply. Missy's vet said he had only had one client have PRP injections and it did not help. The vet that would do the PRP injection (that my vet referred us to) said he has had mixed results. So I am not quite sure what route I should go. I did find a acupuncturist 25 miles away that told me she has had excellent results treating dogs with arthritis so Missy had a appointment for next Thursday. I will try that first and take it from there.
I am a ways away from Baltimore. Rural Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin teaching vet school is fairly close, but I am not a fan.If you're anywhere near Baltimore, I know the world's leading canine orthopedist.

I've had accupuncture done on several of my dogs, most for arthritis or Lyme disease-related issues, with great success. You have to keep up with it and get it done regularly at first, but it really did help mine. My vet who does acupuncture also does chiropractic adjustments and she's done almost all of my dogs. She adjusts them after surgery and before shows or when they're just ouchy. That can really help too! Good luck, I hope acupuncture helps Missy.
I have a 10 year old Sheltie rescue. We have had her for 8 years. She has always had elbow arthritis, it has advanced over the years and is now giving her quite a bit of pain and lameness. We had given her Adequan injections for several years till they no longer helped. She has always been on on glucosamine supplements fish oil, and Dasuquin and still takes all of these. She had a steroid injection in both elbows 2 years ago, which did nothing, maybe even made her limp worse for several weeks. She recently had a month of twice weekly laser therapy which also did nothing. Currently she is on Carprofen, Tramadol, and Gabapentin. I have decided against a Assisi loop and also stem cell therapy. The only other thing my Vet has left to offer her for relief is PRP injections. I am skeptical. We have spent so much money, and put Missy, who is fearful and has severe noise phobia through so much. So I was hoping someone has had experience with PRP injections and can give me some advice? On a side note, I posted here 2 years ago for advice about anal gland removal. My only positive in this post is she had her anal glands removed and it was wonderfully successful!! Thank you to anyone who read this and can offer me any advice.
Our 11 1/2 year old sheltie is scheduled for PRP injections for moderate/severe elbow dysplasia this week. We were going to do stem cells 3 years ago but a heart issue made the procedure too risky. He has been treated by some of the best ( pain and rehab) vets in 2 states since he was diagnosed 5 1/2 years ago. Now he also has back issues. This is so heart breaking and wrenching to go through. Arthritis is such a huge negative quality and Quantity of life disease since it can be so painful.
Our treatment protocols have included:
Rehab exercises, Class 4 Laser treatments, Medical Accupuncture ( it makes a huge difference in who does it as we see dramatic differences in techniques and results) Piezo Shockwave Therapy and Assissi Loop (no real effect noticed with AL). RX wise, he is on Gabapentin & Galliprant. Adequan shots continue to be given monthly. Supplements include Dasaquin DM and Flexidin Advanced. Among other things..but largely due to other multiple health issues and the several meds our pooch takes, we have not tried CBD oil.
A good reference book is Dr. Michael Petty's pain Relief for Dogs available via Amazon.
We have also outfitted our home with Ramps, long strips of yoga mats on our hardwood floors to prevent slipping, raised food bowls and invested in a good sheltie sized stroller as we need to walk more while he can't walk very far anymore...
With further regard to the PRP injections, our reading has revealed that most dogs under 10 do see benefit... Those over with mild to moderate OA generally will need more than one shot, spaced two weeks apart.. It is extremely costly... $600-700 per shot process- an opiod and propofol are usually the agents used for conscious sedation. Like with most things, individual reactions vary markedly but the vet's experience, technique and equipment are very important considerations.
We so hope and pray that we will see improvement with the PRP.. for our 'couldn't be more loved pooch'....
