Puppy biting and snipping non stop

Thanks for all the good advice. Hopefully the coping methods will help her direct her attention to better things and avoiding this behavior. There's always this feeling that I'm not doing things right but at the same time I seem to have the bar a little bit too high considering her age.

I'll let you know how it goes with our little devil :]
And here's a picture of her here

She's soooo cute!

Hi, Raya!
what you have is a puppy...
Hey Shelties owners,
I deseperatly need help with a sheltie puppy. It's a 10 weeks old female that has a big attitude and likes to eat about anything that comes close to her jaw...
it sounds you have a healthy girl with good appetite
Here's the deal. She never barks at people at the door, never barks outside, she's almost housetrained, she already knows how to sit and on her way to learn other tricks... but anytime I or anyone else walks somewhere in the house, she chases us and jumps.
she gets excited. Try make all your comings and goings low key affair and do not pay attention to her while she is in jumpy state.... also try " settle" command-hold her lightly but firm by the collar and slightly by the scruff of her neck and sit quietly slow breathing several times a day, you can also wrap her in the towel or small blankie- it affects some acupuncture points and calms then down
Now jumping's not too bad, until she sink her teeth in the pants or the leg, and it hurts more and more everyday because she's gaining strength.
redirect baiting- have chewies, flossies on every corner and make it sound more exciting than your pants

She also likes to bite the legs of our coffee table, and now recently she's started eating other furniture as well. Anytime we catch her doing it, we tell her a strick "NO" or "STOP".
use bitter apple spray and again redirect to chewy toys or food
But everytime she hears that, she goes absolutely insane and starts barking as loud as she can, like a little girl plugging her ears and screaming LALALALALALA... if I try to snap her out of it by touching her, she tries to lunge at me and bite my hand. I can't tell her to sit because she barks so loud that I'd have to scream for her to hear me, and she'd just end up barking more...
how to hold- 3 fingers go under the collar and 1 and index fingers make a V from under her jaw so she can not bite your hand, other hand goes on the scruff, hold her firmly and tell her in low firm voice- "enough" then "settle" command and spend some quiet time with her, she is only a pup...

Sometimes I just want to get her in the crate, but I don't want her to associate the crate with punishment. She's really good with her crate, she won't complain at all when we put her in there, but she won't get in there herself either...

I exercise her once every day,

but the weather here is cold and the time I can walk her outside is rather limited. When I get her a toy, she'll play a few seconds with me, then will pull it off and will drag it by the coffee table or whatever furniture and will switch to the furniture and bite it. she is a baby and needs to be taught how to play with toys, you also have to make it silly and exciting for her
Or if I'm holding the toy and shaking it while she's biting it, then she'll bite it for a moment and switch to my hand and bite it.

We've tried the "OUCH" and the "BAD GIRL" when she bites. But she still does the same thing; she barks, and then the biting starts again as soon as she stops to bark.

I've bought a clicker and tried positive reinforcement. I will have her focus for some time, but she ends up getting frustrated and barks at me when she doesn't get the click.
she is too young and has limited attention span, all her training should be done is couple of a minuts sessions

I'm very discouraged here, and I don't know what to do anymore. Any ideas that could lead me to get her to snap out of this really bad habit or biting and snipping at everyone?
patience and persistence, she is a baby yet.... if she bites by the time she is 4 1/2 months then you are in trouble...

Oh my, how could that sweet innocent face ever purposely chew anything, LOL? :wink2: What a cute puppy! Just hang in there, the phase will pass. And as everyone has said, give her lots that she can chew on and when you can't watch her, crate or x-pen. I don't know how I'd survive without x-pens!

I want to thank everyone again for the advices.
We bought a baby gate last night to create an enclosure in the kitchen when we eat, so she has a safe place while outside her crate, and to serve as a timeout area if she doesn't behave properly and goes out of control.

This said, she was extremely good last night; I followed your advices and made sure I had a toy close to me to swap the furniture with; I also made sure to reward her verbally or through the clicker that going for the toy was an acceptable behavior.

I walked her an extra time in the evening because it was snowing and not windy at all; that helped get rid of the extra energy.

I've also added a bedtime moment to her crate schedule; before, we'd just crate at the moment the last person would go to bed; but with a bedtime schedule, it adds a "dead zone" moment where we can actually relax and not worry... and she didn't complain at all, which was terrific.

She does look very angelic and adorable :], that's why we picked her... I think that her fur will look gorgeous when it's all grown up.

Although everything was great last night, I realize that I have to take it one day at a time, that I'll have better days and not so better days. I was thinking of writing a blog of my experience of raising a sheltie puppy... that's my first dog after all. My boyfriend lived with 3 different dogs but never raised them by himself, so it's definitely challenging but rewarding for us.

Hi Raya: She is so beautiful! What a face! I miss having a sable.
I wrote in for the first time in December because Zoe (who is now 8+ mos) was chewing everything - suddenly it has all but a bit stopped. All the advice that you got worked for me; it just takes time. I always told her to leave it or AHHH when she was chewing something she wasn't supposed to and then gave her something she was allowed to chew and did a lot of sitting on the floor with her playing. You have to keep reminding yourself, she has only been here for 10 weeks! so young. I have to keep doing the same. On the herding instinct, we are still working. With one of my other angel shelties; however, the herding lasted for her entire 16 years.... Good luck - you are so lucky to have her!

Eveeryone's had good advice. The squirt bottle worked well for me with the leg biting with Diva. She used to bounce up and down and bit me in the back of the thigh. I stopped the biting but she still herds me but only bounced off my rear sometimes now.

Ember did the bark when I went ouch, and then back harder. Turned out she thought I was playing if I didn't leave. What worked with her was a loud ouch, cros my arms over my chest and turn my back on her. That really hurt her feelings.

All great advice! She's definitely a typical 10 week old Sheltie.

This mouth is made for herdin...
Herdin's what I do...
Until my Mom train's me better
I'm going to keep on herdin' you

Cute Barb, I'm going to think of this now every time Ginny is nipping at our heals

Layla is my herding fool. She loves to nip my pantslegs. Beckon does it, too. They both know that if say, "Knock it off, you little morons," that I mean business. Most of the time, I don't mind, unless I'm o thje stairs. Layla loves the game we play: I start saying, in a high, frightened voice, "Help! It's the Big Bad Sheepdog! Help!" She whirls and jumps and herds me like crazy!

Yeah, I know. When I'm 70, I'm gonna break a hip. :uhoh:

Yes, its crazy how sometimes we actually encourage them! I LOVE it when the boys jump and will encourage to dance and jump around me...but then when they do the same thing when someone comes to the front door, any wonder why they are confused when Mom tells them to "Chill out!" :rolleyes2:

I'm my own worst enemy sometimes! :o
