Puppy Height and Weight

Bella is now 6 months and she is weighing in at 15 lbs. and stands at 14 1/2 inches.(both her parents were exactly 14 1/2) I thought she was looking a little thick, but i have noticed she goes through periods of looking stocky and then we get a growth spurt. Her coat is really coming in too. yesterday i could see it (well whats a good word?) flowing, blowing, being tostled in the wind when she was running.

This is a great thread.

Ginny seems to have stopped growing, looks like she's going to stay a little squirt. At 10 months old she's 13.5" tall and weighs 12.5 lbs. :smile2:

Duncan is 10 and a half months old now. He is holding strong at 12.5"!! Such a tiny boy! Anyway, he is about 11 lbs, maybe a half under or over. I should get a better weight on him.

He definitely hasn't grown in many months - at least 4. Do you think his growth plates are fully developed? (As in, could he jump full height in agility without injury?)

What? Agility? Maaaayyybbbeee....

I think they say wait till a year. Every pup is different. Some stop growing early and some keep growing. I thought Bailey was done. She didn't grow from 8-10 months old, but all of a sudden at 11 months old, she shot up 1/2 an inch.

There are several schools of thought on this. I have always heard that dogs shouldn't start agility until they are a year old to ensure their growth plates are closed.

For me, I am teaching Lexi to jump on a lower jump, but do occasionally allow her to jump at her true height (16"). When doing repetitive training (like targets etc) where she is going to do something over and over, I keep the jump height low. But for me, to suggest that having her jump 16" 5 times a day is no different than her jumping on and off the back of the couch 20 times a day.

It's one of those things that if a dog gets hurt, they say you should have waited. But with an excitable dog, she's just as likely to get hurt in her normal every day jumping behavior.

I've had mixed feelings about starting Fluffy on jumping because of that. She has a play agility tunnel, and she loves it. She zips through it and expects a treat every time. :smile2:

Then on the other hand, when she's playing with Smudge she LEAPS up and off of the living room chair. She does this numerous times a day. I've never measured the chair for height to see how tall it was, but it's at least 20 inches, because it's up a little over Smudge's head. Sometimes when she gets excited she has been known to jump over Smudge. :eek2:
