Pyper moves out!!

So, after a very disappointing trial last week end, we have been working hard to figure out how to get Pyper to move....especially speed up in the weaves. I had lots of good suggestions from friends and forum members. My trainer was a huge help.

In general she told me to quit trying to get Pyper to go faster by running ahead of her. If I run with Pyper and give her lots of encouragement, she actually gets speedier. By the 3rd obstacle, I was having a hard time keeping up with Pyper...she was flying!

For the weaves, I was saying, "Let's go, let's go" to get her to move. My trainer observed, that it seemed to make her unsure. She suggested "good girl" or "yes".....it works like a charm. As Pyper hears that she is doing it right she steps up her pace.

We had 2 successful runs yesterday. Only one Qd, but that's because on the second run, the last obstacle was a tunnel and it was right next to the open gate. Pyper opted to run out the gate instead of taking the tunnel. She certainly wasn't the only one who took that option. I don't know why they don't close the gates. It was an ASCA trial. I don't think that would happen in AKC.

Side note: Lexi was a super star!! One knocked bar away from 2 clean runs. First time in Open jumpers. No need to encourage her to go faster....she zooms!
 
That's great! So glad you have a trainer that knows you and your dogs who can offer ideas and suggestions.

Bentley is the same way--the farther my husband gets ahead of him, he seems to kind of give up, like "well I can't get there so I'll just go at this steady pace". But if my husband stays with him and accelerates WITH him, Bentley is a lot speedier.
 
My first reaction to the title of the post was.... Is Pyper getting her own apartment? :p

That's great that you figured out how to get her going... Even if it seemed counterintuitive. Yay on the speed.

Not sure about the gate, but I know in NADAC, your dog is supposed to know not to run out of the ring, like they know sit. When I started, there was a ribbon marking the sides, no fence, no gates. Talk about pressure as a novice, haha. I don't don't think I ever saw that with AKC. I suppose that falls under, "you're dog should be under control" bit. So, yeah, they don't have to shut the gate, cuz the dogs shouldn't be going out.... In a perfect world. :) at least she wasn't alone.

And lastly, yay to Lexi!

LOL.....no, if anyone is getting their own place, it will be Lexi. She can be tough to live with sometimes.....:smile2:

Yeah, I don't know about the gate, but whatever. I'm just so glad she was moving!!

That first article is dead on in our situation. My trainer and I agreed that from now on running courses in class, I will not be stopping for ant errors. Just keep running and reward for the speed. Pyper just wants to do it right, so I'll just make sure she never thinks she's wrong....even when she runs out the gate, at least she did it quickly!!
