Question for Show Folks

OMG! What a product!

That's exactly Bacca's problem....no undercoat at all! His ruff looks totally pathetic lying flat against his neck! I'm going to follow up on this supplement this week.

Thanks alot!

I ordered both the Inflight supplement as well as their Naked Care Conditioner.

I've not really used much of the supplement because I'm cautious about introducing new stuff to Bacca's diet these days.

But I gave Indy a good go over with the Naked Care. I don't know if any of you have noticed but I find that Tri's and Merles tend to have a harsher coat - a little bit rougher to the touch than a sable.

Well I noticed tonight that Indy was still blowing alot of coat (my goodness, won't he ever stop!). So I laid him down with the furminator and this Naked Care. I pulled out enough undercoat tonight to stuff a teddy bear! But best of all was the texture of his fur with Naked Care. It is so soft, I could have made a pillow out of him (along with the fur I took out for the teddy!). And he shines!

Thanks, Lightplum for the tip!

I'm taking note of this - but it says use weekly? Would you normally wash a sheltie weekly (other places I've read have said that's too often).

I bought myself a grooming book on Thursday and I am slowly working my way through ready for when I have a dog with a full coat.

I'm also working on Cadbury's coat because since we hit summer his skin has gone so dry. He has never had a really shiny coat like some labs despite my best efforts. But I've asked my trainer who has leonbergers so knows about coats and she has got me using a slicker on him to see if we can stimulate his skin to produce more oil. I've got to try that for 3 weeks and then, if things don't improve consider adding a supplement to his diet.

Has anyone heard of Yumega? I keep reading that is quite good. I'm also told that feeding eggs (either raw or cooked) helps with coat condition and I have noticed this with Cadbury, so I may have to try that.

I love doing all the grooming and brushing, I find it very therapeutic and satisfying.

Yes if you use the naked care spray they recommend bathing every week because it can bulid up on their coat. I do bath my show ones every week.

Have you tried Salmon oil on cadbury? Or even flax seed...but I would try the salmon oil first.

Thank you.

He currently gets oily fish (usually pilchards) once a week and I have now started giving him scrambled eggs once a week.

He gets no supplements. My trainer has said give the slicker grooming 2-3 weeks and then if that doesn't work consider a supplement. I've been using the slicker since Friday and I have not seen the dandruff coming off him like that first time, but he still seems to have a very dull coat compared to most lab.

But I'll have to see how it goes, I'll bear in mind salmon oil, I hadn't heard of that before.

I should add he is not sore or itchy, which is why I haven't rushed him to the vets.

Many show people here use the Plush Puppy products. They were designed for double coated breeds and I find them fantastic. The Plush Puppy owner is also really great about giving advice for any problems. Deska has a very dry (and heavy) coat and I was told to wash him weekly (altho I only do it fornightly)

When I was getting 'training' to show Tully I was told to use a boar bristle brush (actually a Mason Pearson) to get the extra shine. It does make a huge difference.

I havent used any plush puppy products however Their spray bottles are second to none with spraying they dont get clogged.

I never washed by Shelties every week. I washed them a few days before each show, and that was it. And my boy had the biggest coat out of everyone in the ring.

I feed Diamond Naturals and Nupro Supplement, and that's all they get. (Well, brewers yeast with garlic pills for fleas!)

Weekly seems like alot to me too! Generally I do 4-6 weeks; with dry shampoo in between.

I'm not giving Indy the Inflight supplement right now because he's still shedding, but I've started it again with Bacca now that he's eating again.

p.s. Narmowen, nice to see your post! We haven't heard from you in a while!

Since I started back up at the University (Master's of Library and Information Sciences), I've been studying my butt off and haven't had time for much!

It's glad to be back, though!

I do the dry shampoo also-and I love baby powder!

The only thing with inflight is you have to take them off it when you notice they start their shed so it doesnt prolong in and than once they are done you put them back on it.

Hi Lightplum

OK - so when does a Sheltie NOT shed! I've got both the boys back on Inflight now. But not sure when I should take them off? Are you talking about the big blows, not regular daily shed? I can brush the boys daily and still have quite a handful. If I use that as criteria, they would NEVER be able to take the Inflight! :smile2:
