Remy's Rewards

Wow all these chewers....I always wished Piper and Finnie would use a good chew toy but reading all these posts I consider myself lucky that they aren't! Finnie enjoys a good squeaky toy but not to chew.

If anyone leaves a bathroom door open, Remy is sure to sneak in there and remove the roll (we have open leaver type holders, not the locked in kind). The bugger is fast and can out run 5 of us trying to capture him, so he gets treats for releasing the rolls. It's a win-win for him no matter what...
 
I just give Kismet an empty toilet roll - better to chew and eat cardboard than everything else she gets her mouth on (I have no idea where that girl gets things). Usually I have to give Della one too. At least now when the cats sit in a box and rip it apart I've got two little dogs cleaning up the cardboard instead of me!
 
We keep close tabs on Remy b/c you never know what he's going to be chewing on or eating. We are constantly rearranging furniture, removing plants & fixtures, and various other "proofings" to make our home safe for him. He looks like a big brute with his salami tongue hanging out the side of his mouth, but he's really just a high strung sissy when it comes to most things. I'm sure that some of his chewing is nerves and not just being a puppy. He's so crazy and so cute that we simply laugh at his bad behavior most of the time. I'm hoping the American made hide chews we ordered will give him something to focus on and won't be detrimental to him. Not sure what "99% digestible" means but we'll see...

Again, if you haven't seen my thanks already, I really appreciate the responses to my threads. It's so nice to know there are folks out there who care and can offer help. Really trying not to do the wrong thing with this little (actually he's huge) fella. :-)
 
Phew he sounds like a handful! Counting my blessings that Meadow is less interested in chewing except her beloved cardboard boxes. Yeah, just monitor the rawhide chewing - our first Sheltie got a flat piece stuck to the roof of her mouth and partway down her throat and was choking! We were right there and got it out quick.
 
Brodie is a BIG chewer!!!! When he was younger, drywall, baseboard all seemed yummy to him - not as enticing to us. I put a dab of Vick's on whatever wood he would chew. I have patched the drywall, still not painted, but now at getting closer to 2, he leaves that stuff alone. He dearly loves to pull my shoes out of closets and chew the laces off - closet doors are most always shut and I keep spare laces on hand now. That too has calmed down a bit. Toilet paper - nope - that is still a hot commodity. He goes in, shreds a ton and then cries until we come in and check out his artwork. He only like to lick slippers for some reason....

We are down to 3 types of chewies.... Bully Sticks are a biggy and he goes through at least 1 a week. When younger, he could do 2 - 3 a week. (I know but it was that or the drywall...) I used to only buy Sancho & Lola bully sticks off Amazon - the 'odor free' ones. But a while back I bought two Bully Buddies from Bow Wow Labs after seeing an ad on Facebook. Brodie LOVES, LOVES, LOVES his bully buddy! They are hard plastic, shaped like a bone, the bully stick end gets screwed in and no more fear of swallowing that last inch whole! There is a bit of waste, but if you are careful, not much, and SO worth not having to limit him so much or follow him around the house when he has it. He does love the Bully Buddy ALOT, carries it around, drops it on the floor, plays with it, drove my husband and son nuts with the noise at first but you just ignore it after a while. I did buy bully sticks from Bow Wow Labs to try and was pleased with them so I just order direct from them now. The only other chewies we give are Cadet Chicken Breast and DreamBone Sticks Wrapped with Real Chicken. We used to give a large variety, but less options results in less digestive issues. We do give treats - They like the Bow Wow Lbas treats but I think they are too pricey for what you get. If you look up pyramid pan here on SN, there is a fantastic, EASY recipe to make chicken liver treats that our dogs, cat and the dogs in our training classes really like.

That looks awesome. Remy is BIG for a Sheltie - he's got to be close to 30lbs right now at 8 months old. I am on the fence between the MEDIUM or the LARGE. Remy gets the BIGGEST Bully Sticks I can find. What size do you use?
