Revel has old dog Vestibular Disease

Julia, glad to hear Revel is already doing better!

This happened to my mom's dog earlier this year, it was very scary. But now you can barely tell it happened. When he gets tired his head tilts just a little bit but that's it!

Sending good thoughts.

so scary

my heart goes out to you...nothing is worse than a sick pet, it immobilizes us to wonder what is going on or what to do....and as they start aging, you want to make the best choices on their behalf...best wishes to you both!!!!

When I took home my 1st sheltie, the breeder was emphatic that when my dog got older if it had any symptoms to be merciful and don't let her suffer. She said hers all died of stroke at 16 and 17, she said if mine went that route just do the right thing quickly, don't prolong it. She fell over one day, couldn't get up, or stand on her own, seemed disoriented, eyes twitching in her head, no focus, drooling, etc. No issues with previous sickness. I immediately took her in and they said stroke, so I put her down, she was 17. I couldn't let her suffer. But reading up on this has me wondering if it was in fact a stroke. Maybe back then they didn't know what they do now, and they didn't do any testing-the internet wasn't around yet. Vet care was basic and not as involved as now. The Vet just said stroke, and recovery was probably not going to return her to the quality of life she once knew, so he advised to be merciful and let her go.

Unfortunately all too familiar, as Asta had an attack of this on Valentine's day. It was so scary and we also thought she'd had a stroke but the eyeballs whirling around in her head were classic sympom of vestibular.

After her sudden and unexpected passing, my vet and I conferred, and we now think she actually DID have a stroke which affected her cranial nerves and gave the symptoms of vertigo. She did recover from the first attack but the second was probably another stroke.

We still grieve every day for our Big Girl. :(

I'm so glad Revel is improving. Hugs to both of you.

I'm so glad Ravel is feeling better.

I know exactly how scary this can be. Our Finish Spitz had Vestibular and, as luck would have it, her attack happened on a Saturday about 1 hour after the vet's office closed for the day. We thought she had a stroke also.

It took her about 3 weeks to recover but always had a tilt to her head.

It is so encouraging reading all these messages - and I'm really surprised actually how common this seems to be.
When you get a puppy for the first time there is so much information on hand to tell you what to expect, but with old dog there doesn't seem to be as much so things like this can be really frightning and there is always the awful thought "is this IT" in the back of your mind.

I know Revel is really coming back to normal now because he keeps trying to hump my leg! :rolleyes2: He still falls over occasionally and is no where near as stable as he was before this happened but compared to last week it is a major improvement.

I'm off work on Thursday so will have more time and I'm looking forward to taking all of them up on the hill again, just for a short walk to start with. Hopefully it won't be raining. I know he'll be so happy not to be left behind. He keeps trying to sneak out of the door with the others.

.

LOL Funny the things that let us know a loved doggie is getting better!

You are right that there simply isn't the wealth of info on what to expect when our little ones get old and multiple health issues can come into play compared to the slew of books on puppies. And, I so understand the dread of "is this it?" when a senior gets ill...been there too many times.

I am so happy for you and Revel that he is on the road to recovery! WTG Revel!

It is SO true when dogs reach the senior milestone most vets don't have much to contribute other than well, they are older now. But I wonder if it is because no one really has compiled real info or studied it. It is so hard to watch their quality of life diminish, and they KNOW it, and they get as frustrated as we do. Just live in the moment, enjoy now with your boy, and be grateful for each and every good day. That is what I had to do this time last year when I knew my girl wasn't gonna be with me much longer (she passed 1-29-14) in my arms, so I was determined to make the most of the time we had together.

Just seen this, poor Revel! I feel for him as my mum gets vertigo and it's a horrid condition. I'm so glad he is on the mend.

Big hugs from me and the gang:hugs

Well Revel went out with the other boys today, just for a short walk but it is the first time in almost 2 weeks that he's been with them.
I was delighted with him. It is pretty bumpy where we walk and gradients etc and he didn't fall down at all.

I took a bit of video to share this milestone. It's a bit bumpy because I took it on my phone while walking backwards but you get the idea anyway! In fact I think it was me filming that slowed the walk down more than Revel!
