Rough Play

I posted some time ago,a video of Trapp & Earnhardt playing.Unfortuneately it was really misunderstood,or even to some to rough.

These guys here,play rough alot.I have never seen it escalate to the point I thought either Trapp or Jasper was in danger of getting hurt.Since Earnhardt is always involved.

I look for signs with these guys,play bow,Earnhardt tends to not look straight in the eye,and often times walks away when he has had enough.There is no question who is alpha in this household.

I do think strongly,that since Trapp was our first,he learned to play much like a lab does,still to this day,he does many things Earnhardt does when he is wreastling with Jasper.

Jasper is our toughy guy.He initiates it,then does not know what to do next~

I'm pretty much like Barb,when I have heard enough,or seen it long enough,I just simply let a beller out of me,and tell them to stop.
 
It doesn't sound like rough play is the problem to me (well I am used to how labs play!), But it does sound like Maverick is trying to control Ryder.

In herding breeds this is quite common as they are instinctively controlling. GSDs are especially bad. My trainer now has 3 (one pure, 2 crosses) and it is something she has to watch because they want to control everything.

That can become an issue and personally I would not allow one dog to prevent the other dog from playing or socialising as you could be developing real trouble.

I don't go in for dominance, pack theories, BUT, in your house you are in charge. Maverick should not be disciplining Ryder when you have told the pup off. That is your job and he shouldn't be 'ganging up'. If Cadbury did that he would get a telling off too.

Sorry if that sounds a bit fierce, but I have met dogs that have been allowed to control a younger companion and the result has been a stressed older dog that is prone to being aggressive towards others and a younger dog that is desperate to break free and try and get to other dogs.

Yes....they play rough, and sometimes it hard to tell if they playing....but generally they will let the other pup know when they've had enough. That's my experience, at least. So I just let it got. Unless, of course, they are doing this on my bed...often the case...in which case I tell them to take their nonsense elsewhere, you fool dogs!

I apologize for the very beginning,it is dark.But give it a minute or so,and I turn on the light.

It is common occourance here,that these guys play like this.And usually Trapp will manage to get Earnhardt going for a second round.Now that Earnhardt has lost even more weight,he is quick on his feet.

After thinking about your request to post the link,I decided I would.Since I know my dogs better than anyone,we know Earnhardt would never hurt one of his brothers.

I did not think that it was too rough. Your Sheltie was quick to look for more when your bigger dog left. I think that the statement made by several in the post " Its too rough when one of the dogs says its too rough" was a great comment.

A sticky is kinda of like a "permanent" thread. Many topics seem to come up over and over again. So Kelly and team started creating "stickies" so that they are more prominent in the forum and become abit of a reference thread.
