Sca got it right at flyball

I remember having an off day after giving Tully a venison ear the night before - eventually she barfed it up that night but it must have really weighed her down.

Sounds like you may need to up your treat rewards. Once I started taking roast chicken to training Deska never dropped the ball again. You could try playing catch around the house but only rewarding if he holds the ball in his mouth, not for catching it. Make him hold it until you take it from his mouth then give a treat. If you play fetch only throw the ball again after he has dropped the ball in your hand and never throw a ball that a flyball dog has not brought all the way back.

Its a hard slog isnt it. I often hear agility trainers say how easy flyball is to train but it can actually take a long time. But I tell you, once Sca has got it put together he is going to love the speed!

Yep the trainer suggested the make him give the ball exercise around the house. Sadly it is a battle between fat Sca and enough training treats...

He does do good and I think might have a decent showing if I can get through to U-Fli and sign him up for August. When he does a clean run he is pretty fast. Not as fast as his 2 BC buddies ....yet

Shelties are so smart!

I went out last night and we did tennis ball instead of frisbee. Well rather than rotating balls to wear Sca's furry behind out I made him bring it to me then retossed that ball. It took two times for him to figure out that he must hand it to me or no ball gets launched. Hopefully if we work on this every night until Monday it will transfer to Flyball.... we have Border Collies to smoke...

Boy he picked that up quick, go Sca boy. It will be interesting to see how quickly he translates that into bringing it back from the box.

Tully runs faster than almost all the BCs and all the cattle dogs at our club so I'm pretty chuffed. The only one faster is actually slower at her full jump height, and seeing as Tully jumps full height all the time then I reckon that makes Tully faster. But it probably took a year of competing before she started picking up those times (she does a flat 6sec - my aim is to get her down to 5.8sec), plus she is fastest when she runs with the crazy, barking, adrenalin junky team.

No idea on times. I was planning on trying to make a timer but have not gotten to it. Had some trouble getting a working infrared beam working (laser would be easy but risky for the dogs). Then I got distracted :o

:lol:Laser beam, that's advanced. Don't y'all have stop watches on that side of the world ;)
Not for racing. You need something to trigger the timer as dogs cross and to ensure no one jumps the start :biggrin2:

I wanted to build a whole starting tree so we can practice. They are fairly pricey and I think I could make an inexpensive one for practice if I can get a IR beam working. Even less expense if I use an existing laptop not lights and a display.

You're the gadget man! that looks like advanced stuff to me. But no way I would pay $1000 for a system when a stop watch only costs $10!
