We have to share racing lights with other jurisdictions - Farmtek dog agility system, pretty expensive and they are also a lot of effort to set up and maintain so really only used in comps. Last comp we got them back from Sydney and they werent working properly which was a pain in the butt.
But the line stewards also have a stop watch in case the lights fail. Its the challenge when you are doing line steward to get your time to match the ETS. At training and demos we just use stop watches. It helps to have someone at the start line to watch the cross overs and signal the distance though so you can adjust your release times. Being too far apart is a bigger problem than early cross overs so its better to have someone watching, all a ETS can tell you is you crossed early, not by how much. Mind you its great if you can record the time, too hard to do stop watch and crossovers at the same time.

He did miss once but I will take the credit as I was letting him start toward Dusty (the other dog) then arc him to the run and let go. Well I didn't arc him enough so he did a cheating run skipping every jump. He was also trying to cheat coming back so they set up a barrier, sneaky Sca decided fine I will get the ball going the other way and cheat that side
He does continue to improve now I just need to get registered with uFli (having issues) so we can run in August
