Schools days for Laddie soon

school days for Laddie soon

Yes, Lad takes treats from me anytime. But the minute he eats it, he is back to acting up.

I don't think he is overwhelmed, to be honest, I think he wants to be in the middle, that is why he pulls and cries, it is me that does not like it, I feel he is getting disrupted and it irritates me. He loves folks around him, always has. When folks come to visit,he cries when they leave. He is definitely a "people" dog.

Just read this after I had posted that he might be overwhelmed...so if you don't think it is that and he is pulling to get to people...wonder what would happen if you asked people to totally ignore him when he approaches them until he has refocused on you and obeyed a command from you like "sit" or "down"? Then as a reward they could greet him and make a big deal of him.

Well, Laddie graduated, I am shocked but pleased. Actually, we did not make it to the last class. Steve and I were on a little trip to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary on the 24th, on the way home, the evening of the 25th, his power steering went bad, praise the Lord, it happened just as we were entering a town. Well, we limped into a motel, checked in, then took the car the next morning to a garage, that is where they diagnosed the problem. They kept the car a day and a half, it did not come out of the shop until late Wednesday afternoon, the obedience class was Tuesday. I called Anna, the instructor and explained what had happened; she said that it was no big deal, that he passed anyway and she felt he could go on to the next level which is "advanced domestic" this is similar to the last class, but more effort is put into what we have learned, after that, it will be CGC, then Rally O, then Agility. I am very proud of him. So, tomorrow, Tuesday, we go again but this time will be in a different group with a different instructor. I understand he spends more individual time with folks on areas that need work, so, should prove interesting.

I have been working with Laddie at home, he does so well, but the minute we hit the streets for a walk, it is like he has not learned anything!! I am getting discouraged. Today, the mail truck rang the door bell, he ran to follow Steve to answer it, I called him to come, but no way, he was like deaf, I kept calling when he got outside, still no answer, he finally came in with Steve, I was so angry, I had to leave the room a few minutes, I did not want to holler at him. Dang it, I wish Steve would respect my wishes and tell him not to come, or at least stop him from coming when the door bell rings, but he does not seem to care, he does it all the time, I am getting fed up with it to be honest. Other than that, however, he is doing well. He now "shakes hands" High fives" "rolls over" and in general, is doing OK, with just the "two of us" *Sigh* I need the patience of a saint. LOL.

Anyway, that is the latest, I will let you know how tomorrow goes. I am looking forward to it.

Oh, he has been a good boy with my Christmas tree as well. I decorated the entire house (looks good too, LOL) all day Saturday, he has been an angel, does not even look at the tree or anything else. Good boy, Laddie.

Congratulations! Laddie did a great job...I hope the next class goes well for you both. I will be waiting to hear about the new class. Keep up the good work, Laddie.

Congratulations on your wedding anniversary and to Laddie for "graduating". :)

With the holidays approaching maybe you could ask for a truck load of patience as your gift to help you deal with Laddie as he progresses through his "terrible teens" .

BIG Congrat's on the class passing! I am thrilled for you that you both made progress and succeeded. It's true a young dog (or any dog) will "go deaf" for certain things and that is an area to keep working on and/or compensating for over time, but you did it! YAY!

Thanks for the congrats.

Well, yesterday was our first day in the more "advanced" group, I actually came in near the end, so, since next Tuesday is the last day for all training until February, I will attend, but then, start in earnest in February, in the meantime, I will practice all I have been taught.

Anyway, the first 15 minutes, I wanted to cry, I felt so confused and Laddie forgot all he had learned, however, as I got use to the group and the instructor, I did a wee bit better, but, LOL, not much. They work at a much faster pace, do lots of "heel" work, halts with the dog sitting next to the handler, left turns and "about faces" which really confused me. Ahahahah, when he said turn left, I made a complete turn left in a circle, he explained to just turn, well, again, I did a complete circle, Steve was watching and he said Ken, the instructor, just looked at me, then smiled. He said "this is the class where folks get embarrassed" then he showed me what he wanted, then, I got it, man, I WAS embarrassed. He is very patient however, and works more on a one on one in certain areas. He had us doing fast walks, slow walks, walks with lots of halts, sit, stay, extended sit and stay, wait, come, down and wait. Laddie had a hard time, he did not want to wait and kept following me. Since I am new however and they are at the end of the program, so to speak, he had me walk just a few paces, the rest walked almost to the center of the ring. Finally Laddie started to "wait" and "come". He is getting there, but, we have lots of work between now and February. He seems to like it, but as usual, cried the entire time and pull pull pull. UGH. Ken said he cries because he is insecure, that I need to take him in public when training or even to the dog park where classes are so he gets use to the smells, etc. so, I plan on doing that. I really love it though, I was afraid at first, now, I like it better than the beginner class, I like how it goes non-stop, we really work in this group, I think it will be good for both Laddie and I.

Today, I took him to a large, vacant, shaded lot and we worked on what we were taught, he did really well, but, he has a hard time sitting at the heel when we stop, so, I am working on that. When I did the "sit" "stay" I walk a few feet away and then back, he did real well, he broke a few times, but all in all, I was pleased. When I did the "wait" "come" he responded. Ken said when we get to the spot where we stop after we leave the dog, we turn around, sort of spread our legs so he can sit between them, hold the treat and enthusiastically say "here" or "come" It did seem to work.

We also took a nice walk today with his harness, he is still pulling, but, that may be the last thing he stops. All in all, I am very pleased with yesterdays' class and todays' training.

I got this little pouch on a belt that I wear around my waist now when training, I keep his treats in there, LOL, I am now really an official "dog" person and trainer. Love it.

Well, that is all for now, will keep you posted. Hope everyone is having a nice day. It is hot here, man, sure does not seem like Christmas.

That's good news Susis and Laddie...just keep working at it and he will do well in the next class...I just know it.

Thanks Susan, I think he will too. I am really going to put an effort into the training, more than I was before even, I am now starting to enjoy it.

I have just posted a picture of Laddie's little certificate, LOL, I am so proud of him.:smile2:
