Shaved Sheltie

Oh dear! Keeping our paws crossed that it doesn't take that long! I felt so shallow asking the vet if he could be kind to Miles' coat, but I knew deep down that there was no way around it. I just keep reminding myself that it was worth it, so that he can have the quality of life he deserves!
Bacca does have health issues going on so it does take them a bit longer, most dogs it takes about 6 months to look "normal" and a year you wouldnt be able to tell..I hack down my girls when they are in whelp to where they look almost like a smooth collie by the time they do their coat dump after puppies and by the time the pups are 8-9 months old the mom has her glorious coat back.

Its true that Bacca has health issues, but I also know that any groomer/breeder that I've ever talked to says....don't shave...the coat never grows back the same. It completely changes the hair growth and direction, and the guard hair has a toughter time coming back.

That beig said....sometimes you have no choice - in your case surgery. It will come back eventually, to some degree but perhaps not the same as before.

btw. some parts of the body grow back better then others. e.g. belly hair, legs,

The sheltie I had as a kid was shaved every summer. (We didn't know any better and thought we were helping.) Her fur always grew back the same with her usual beautiful guard hair and undercoat in less than a year.

Deska's coat is no worse for wear after being shaved for surgery. It's been 7mths and the only part that isn't at it's pre-surgery length is his ruff. But that's to be expected as the ruff is much longer than the rest of the coat. I'm hoping in another couple of months it will be back to the ground like it was before. He had part of his ruff shaved on two other occassions and it took about 7mths to grow back, I think its taking a little longer this time just because his ruff has gotten longer with age.

Last summer, we had Irina of Vibrant Pets give Bitsy Boodle a puppy cut. No shaving -- just shortened. She was so comfortable -- and it regrew beautifully!

But then, Irina is an artist!!!

Glad to see there is hope

I googled the question how long does it take for a sheltie's fur to grow in after it is shaved, and found you guys. Reading these posts gives me some hope. We took my sweet Molly to the vet this morning to have her teeth cleaned. She keeps getting these waxy deposits in her skin which we would squeeze out, but they would reoccur. The doctor had told us that if she was ever under anesthesia it would be simple for her to cut the deposit out, and it wouldn't come back. So my husband wanted to have them to this. When we picked her up this afternoon, and she ran out to me, I started crying. They hadn't just shaved a couple of small spots around the incision but had shaved 2 great big patches. All I could do was stand there and cry and say "Molly, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry." When I got home and finally quit crying, I called the office and told the vet's assistant how upset I was and I felt the doctor should have explained exactly what would be done this morning. Add to her pitiful appearance the fact that she can't run or jump for 7 days, and we have to keep her from chewing or licking the incisions, I'm feeling quite sorry for her and for myself.

When our Rory had surgery for HD he was shaved from the middle of his back and tummy all the way down his hip/leg. His coat not only grew back within well under a year, he had the thickest, most luxurious coat of any sheltie we have ever owned. So your little ones will be just fine given a little time...and the one plus is that they couldn't care less about appearances like we humans do. As long as they are loved, get lots of yummie treats and a safe home, they are happy campers. I don't advocate ever shaving a sheltie unless it is absolutely necessary for surgery...but when it is necessary they do just fine.

Yeah that's pretty normal. It does grow back....belly wise. But shaving top coat...it takes time.
