Shelties and Temperature

Digging up this old thread because we are now getting our first serious cold of the season with daytime temps below freezing. We let Lucky out on the deck and he seems to manage fine, but definitely does come running when the option to come indoors is available. So I know he can handle the cold, but may prefer the warmth more based upon his reaction to coming indoors.

I find that Piper loves the cold but seeing as how Shelties are very social animals and much prefer the company of their human sheep he always comes running into the house when I call him.

For the first time ever Riley literally pulled me to the door as soon as he was finished his business. It was a -24 °C windchill ( -11 °F) and he was wearing boots and a coat. I was just as happy to go inside!

Windchill this morning was -5 and I couldn't get my pups to come back it. They were in zoomie mode and enjoying the cold I guess. I had to shake the treat bag to get them in. haha

Anything below 25 and Honey wants to come in after only a minute or so, anything below 10 and she wants picked up and carried to the door as soon as she's done (her bathroom spot is about 100ft from the house.) Mango, who spent the summer wanting in as soon as she had been out for a minute, has lost all clinginess now would stay outside for hours...if Honey would too. She is deeply upset her sister is no longer spending half the day outside. She rings the bell, goes outside, waits for Honey to come running, then hangs her head and inches back inside when she doesn't. She did try holding her paw up this morning, like Honey did, but given she immediately ran to the edge of the stairs to see if we'd stay out...I don't think she actually meant it.

Lexi is the same as Honey it seems. 10 or below and her feet get picked up within 5 minutes and she wants me to carry her. Unless I'm kicking snow in her general direction (her favorite), in which case she forgets how cold her feet are. Haha.

Mine are all seniors and it's out and in very quickly when it's -15 wind chill like it was this morning!

Oh my god they are just like each other. Honey loves the kicking game more than anything else ever!

Yes, yes, yes!!!
There are so many different snow removal chemicals on the market to get rid of snow and ice. Since I live in a sub division I have no idea if anyone is using a pet safe product. Also, I live be an Elementary School and the pour salt at all intersections. No way are my dogs going out without booties on. If they are just running out in the backyard to go potty they don’t wear boots.
