Shelties on Craigslist

The ads are gone! Maybe it's happening -- no more dog ads on these lists!!

I wish this was true, but we just helped in the transport of a really sweet 9 year old sheltie into rescue who was listed on Craigslist.

Thankfully, when contacted, this sheltie's owners were willing to let their dog come into rescue...not all advertizers are because they want the money from selling their dog/s. :(

Very true! Our beloved Annie Laurie started on Craigslist because that's all her owner knew to do. Fortunately, my friend in Galesburg IL saw it and send us the picture -- and the rest was history!!

I have gotten several shelties from either craigslist or our local paper. I have kept several & rehomed others as rescues. I always educate people to let them know that it isn't safe to rehome dogs to just anyone. My daughter works for an animal sanctuary & I volunteer there too. Shelties are rare around here but it breaks my heart to see them posted. Too bad petfinder doesn't allow individual posts anymore. It was safer to post there.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year. Thought I'd share this video in case you haven't seen it. Love the shelties in it!

My wonderful boy Chauncey who I adore with my whole heart was on craiglist twice. I was told about him from someone who helped in the rescue and was told he was a girl and they were suppose to let me go see him/her and had me waiting 3 days to make a 5 hour drive and left me hanging. Why they were involved when the owners had him and they were coordinating me still leaves me wondering what was going on. Rescue would not allow me to adopt as I don't have a yard with a fence. I got tired of the carrot bait dangling business and finally told the rescue I wasn't interested, the hurt and hassle and such and gave up.
6 weeks later, I got an email saying there was a dog on craiglist. I was told don't worry about gender or looks, worry about personality when you look at dogs, I looked at the ad, it was a male and the ad was two weeks old and I was positive he was gone already but I wrote the owner about why I wanted a dog and the kind of home we have and told him up front we did not have a fence. I figured it was another dead end but tried anyway. The guy wrote back and we exchanged phone calls and he asked me to come meet him that evening and I knew he was special. I took him home the next day after going to the bank, ( I did pay for him) the man said he did not want him in rescue and they were trying to get him, (the numbers of rescue dogs was too high to him that were sitting and waiting and I think he might have been previously turned down by them himself.)
the reason he was not keeping him was his wife was allergic and she said she couldnt live on benedryl all the time.
I brought my new best friend home renamed him and went through his records I was given. His tag had the name I recognized as the female I was originally suppose to drive 5 hours for previously but didn't. So I believe in my heart he was meant to come to be with us, it was just a twisted path with a few detours to his forever home. He will always be my family forever. We take him everywhere with us, we rarely ever are apart for any period of time. He goes to the dog park and out to dinner, he is my saturday morning flea market buddy and I can't imagine life without him. He is so endeared to my heart and I love him so. He lives a more exciting life and gets more attention then many dogs I know whose families use the fenced yard as the boundaries and excuse to not pay attention to their dog. Chauncey I am sure never had the attention he gets now, he is the center of our world, he is always by my side, even sleeps on the floor in the bathroom while I shower.
He is a craiglist dog, 2 times in 6 weeks and I am grateful he and I connected with so many variables against us. It was meant to be. I am sure there are terrible stories on there, but his story is a great one, the family who had him 6 weeks were just the bridge to bring us together. If the rescue group had gotten him I wouldn't have my boy. He is my gift from God, a present I needed and wanted for quite a while.
I also know a female sheltie who was from craiglist who now has a new mom who works in a nursing home as an activity director and the little sweety goes to work everyday with her and is loved by 40 or more patients and is so spoiled, that is another successful craiglist story.

I can relate to your feelings, Internette. I saw Jack listed on craigslist for free. He was a 9 month old tri that looked so cute. He was about an hour from me so I contacted the person in the ad. We exchanged emails & I told her I had 3 shelties that were rescues. We talked on the phone & made arrangements for me to come meet him. Well that never happened. She flaked out & then stopped responding to my efforts to contact her. I was worried about Jack & hoped if he had been rehomed he was ok. Then 2 months later I got an email from her husband. He was in the military & was being deployed to Iraq. He said she had been arrested & if I wanted Jack I could have him but I had to get him NOW or he would turn him loose on the base. I did talk to him on the phone & told him there was a rescue near him that would take Jack til I could get there. He had to pass them when he left the base. Luckily he dropped Jack off there & I went to get him. That was almost 8 years ago & Jack is still my shadow. Whenever I'm outside he's nearby just watching til I'm done & ready to go inside. I hate to think what would have happened to him if I didn't take him. It was meant to be for sure!

What a story!

Oh yeah! But then I saw a posting for Chelsea & Delilah. They were 2 AKC shelties a woman wanted $75 for each. Now I hate to pay for a dog I'm rescuing but something told me to go see them. I went in March that year & they were in a pen in the cold that was muddy & had a big shed that they could go into. They were barky & jumpy but so sweet looking. Hubby was with me & said no way because he thought they were just wild. There was stuff on the ground that I thought was red poop but come to find out it was red beans that they threw over the fence for them to eat. I asked the woman if they had been on heartworm meds & she said no, she hadn't seen any worms. DUH!!!
I left without them only because hubby was with me. It took 2 weeks for me to wear him down. I couldn't sleep til I got them. I went back & gave her $100 & a baby bed for them. Got them home, bathed & they were amazing.
She had the papers so I tracked down the original owner. It was a woman who had just given birth to her 9th child & she had to rehome all her shelties. She had no idea that these girls were being treated so poorly. She cried when I told her & said she had given the dogs to this lady.
Chelsea & Delilah have been rehomed to 2 fabulous owners & they are treated like loved members of the family. I see Chelsea once in a while & she still greets me. Delilah's owners keep me informed & even helped me rehome another rescue named Lola to some friends who loved Delilah.

Those are just a couple of the stories of shelties I have loved & cared for since 2006. Right now I have 5 & all are special. This group makes me feel like I'm not the only one that believes they can steal your heart.

Oh holy cow. So glad you were persistent and got those 2 OUT OF THERE. I've been volunteering at our shelter for 7 years now and it still blows my mind when I hear these stories. Thank you - you are making a difference, one dog (or two!) at a time. :hugs

Seeing so many unwanted dogs in classifieds, shelters and rescues and knowing that one person can only do so much to help can at times feel overwhelming...but I have a quote on my frig that I read anytime I need to be reminded that each of us CAN make a difference even if it is not as much as we wish we could do.

"I am only one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do."

I have successfully adopted my last 3 purebred Shelties off of Craigslist but it has always been a divorce situation, a family overwhelmed by dogs or an owner who finds out that they just don't get along with the Sheltie personality or the shedding. They've lived long happy lives with me as there is no dog I love more than a Sheltie.

I'm in the process of looking for another Sheltie after losing my beloved Rocky to seizures and the thing that really kills me on Craigslist is the huge number of people looking for their lost Shelties! This is so incredibly sad. I've had Shelties before that were "fear runners" and had to be on a leash at all times. Once that nervousness set in, nothing would stop the running.

One thing that I hope has helped is the availability of the internet for communicating-Craigslist, Facebook lost dog network and others. I feel so bad about those lost Sheltie ads, especially the senior dogs.
