Sheltie's sense of compassion and ability to know when something is wrong.

Nope, not here either...
Toffee explains it like this: "Migraine schmigraine, get up, dogpark, bright lights a callin' NOW, can I can I can I??? weeeeeee, luv u luv u... hungry hungry hungry.. why aren't you petting me, why why why, huh huh huh? awwww, you no luf me, *whine whine whine*nuzzle* sneeze* ok, how about now, just kiss me, luv me, feed me, can I pee, can I? can I can I??"
but by then I AM laughing, Migraine or no

McKinely.............not so much yet!!! His theory is just...........let me attack you and chew on your hair![/QUOTE]

Oh Jan! Isn't McKinely just a wonderful boy!! He has a zest for life! What wonderful puppies we have. They're brilliant.

I personally think that we tend to attribute too much to our pups!

Can they sense emotion! You bet! When I'm in a bad mood, my boys know it - Indy in particular

But can they scout out illness...hmmmm! I'm not sure about that. I'm a Fantasy novile freak and would love to think that animals have that extra-sensory sense - kinda like magic.

All to say that I think our pups can sense when we are out of sorts. Could they distinguish if a stranger was out of sorts. I suppose but only if they could apply it to their own experience.

Hope this makes sense

Oh no Barb. It is no magic. Scientific studies have been done to prove that the Dog can Smell something different. Dog's nose is something like 1000X more sensitive than Humans. They can sense the different smell of cancer cell like Melanoma than Healthy usual cells that they are used to smelling on the owner..:smile2:

I absolutely have one of those. She is my guardian angel. :smile2:

Thought I would add that I concurr with FedAce on this, what we have here is enhanced by training with sense of smell, in fact done so here.

Well, I have to agree with FedAce, too. I saw the article about dogs being able to find cancer faster than Doctor's could.

My first sheltie, Crystal, it seemed like we could read each others minds. My Mother, who could not even believe that Jesus could die and come back to life because it wasn't logical, would tell everyone to watch us and see how Crystal heard everything I said. Sometimes I think I must be a little off mentally--both my parents have died and I have gotten over that, but I can't ever seem to be able to get over my girl Crystal. She was there with me when I was very, very, sick and I don't think I would have gotten through it without her.

Buddy appears to be picking up on moods already.

I work in population health and on either side of me are the cancer screening sections and I know there have been discussions on the dogs sniffing cancer. But the consesus amongst the medicos is that most people will not trust a dog for a diagnosis of something so frightening, which is a shame because it would be a darn side cheaper than the current screening programs (and less invasive than, say bowel screening).

However, they are using this research to invent technology that tests for cancers using smell rather than biopsies or radiography (so much safer). There are already devices that test for the smell of illicit drugs that were invented using drug sniffer dogs as a model.

Heck dogs can sniff out cadavers, bombs, plant products, drugs, fleeing criminals and lost children, so why not disease. Go Lassie!

Oh! Heck! If we are talking about sense of smell, then I totally get it! Bacca can smell dope from a mile away! :rolleyes2: He thinks it's catnip for dogs!

p.s. no incidents lately. Son is behaving himself and keeping it away from the house! Bacca is on the wagon! :o

see, that's why he's being picky about the food- he's in withdrawal :lol:

But i have never seen a Sheltie tried on this medical experiment. i sure would like to see it to see if they are as good at this as other breeds....
