Should my sheltie's hair be longer?

Dont wish for a big coat - you never know what you might end up with!

This is Deska at 4mths and at 2 yrs. So I wouldn't worry too much!

Looking back on my photos Deska's coat started growing around 5mths and was starting to look nice by 6mths. He is 3yrs and I think his coat is still growing!

Plus remember when you see a lot of show shelties, or pics of shelties, they have been groomed and have show products in their fur to make them look fluffier.

Caro..
Brian & I were just looking at your pictures of Deska, and we noticed his coat looks similar to what Jasper looks like now.We can see some grey hair coming in quite heavily on Jasper.Do you think they look similar.
I attached a picture I took of him the other night while he was chillin with Trapp on the bed.
You can really see the grey, and he is this color running down the sides of his neck also.
BTW..Brian's mouth dropped and said..that can't be the same dog as the first picture! And I said it was,he said cudos to you for all that grooming~:wink2:

It honestly depends on the line of the dog, My dads dog who was a puppy mill rescue had the same type of coat as Jasper. His coat did get thick as he aged but he never got the length. So thats why it depends on the line, some will grow the thickness when they age and some will do the length and thickness. It all depends on the pedigree.

It does look the same with the outer coat looking short and flat, I figure Deska was saving all the energy to grow a huge thick undercoat. And of course you can't tell what the undercoat will look like when they are pups. I call him my powder puff boy (love the tribble moniker) - his coat isnt so much long as incredibly fluffy and thick, esp when he gets a winter coat. Thankfully his outer coat is getting longer as he gets older, which helps a bit with the powder puff look.

Here's hoping Jaspar gets a long rather than thick coat, I wouldnt wish a Spring shed on anyone! Although Deska makes a lovely winter blanket - he is very popular down the oval now the cold weather is setting in, everyone wants to cuddle him.

I agree that all lines produce different coats and even pups in the same litter can be different. My sister had a Sable(which i nabbed from her and never gave back) and his tri nephew. Hamish was very fluffy with a thick undercoat. Angus had a very light coat, without much undercoat. Noah, my second Sheltie angel, didn't have much of a coat as a pup but ended up with a very heavy coat that took a lot of brushing. Whenever I took him to the vet's, the comment was that he was all fur. Emma had a very light coat as a puppy but is getting a very nice heavier coat now at seven months. I was privileged to be able to see her mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunts, and even her niece when I picked her up and they all had a very nice coat, not overly heavy. The breeder does have some dogs, particulary the males, that have a heavier coat. Perhaps it depends on if the pups are males or females. Ditto the comment to speak with the breeder. They love to hear from us about our pups and I know mine is always open to any questions that I have.
