size question

If I measured her correctly, Dusty, now 5..5 months is 11.5! How do you get a sheltie to stand straight and still long enough to get measured?

I can not get my 5 month old to stand straight! She tries to eat the ruler when I measure her. I believe she is between 11.5 & 12 inches. She's looks like a mini sheltie. I kind of wish she was a bit larger. My first sheltie was 15 inches and I thought that was perfect. According to that chart, she'll probably be about 13-14 inches. The most important thing to me is that she is a happy and healthy pup.

Both my boys are tall, but not crazy (probably between 16 and 17" - I should measure them again). I still prefer them at standard size though.

I can't speak for Indy because I did not get him until 10 months, but with Bacca, I knew by 6 months that he would oversize. Long, long legs just begging to be grown into! He still has long legs and a long neck too, but when his ruff and feathers grow in, that should camoflauge some.

How much does your pup weigh? Dusty at 5.5 months and 11.5 inches is only 7.5 ibs!

Last week she weighed a little over 7 pounds, so she's probably around 7.5-8 pounds. She's 5 months. Born on May 26th. My vet was afraid she had a liver shunt because she's a little small for a sheltie. We took some blood tests and she's fine. Just a small sheltie. :)

According to the interview on that site where they sell shelties, the breeder who was interviewed likes long legs, shorter bodies. I quess mine are all wrong, Lady is little and so is Lucky. 12 1/2 and 13 inches. Lady is closer to the ground, so that is why she drags everything in with her. Not to buy a little sized sheltie intentionally, that is just how they came out and sold as a pet. We connected like magnets.

I quess if you have a sheltie with longer legs according to this breeder you have picked the right sheltie. I don't look at the legs but the face, and use my gandpappy's myth to watch how much hair is between the pads, he would say that is a well bred dog, lots of hair between those pads. What the h### that really means god only knows, but I look and go by his myth.

This breeder really put out a great interview on that site, what his vision is for a sheltie.

ohh interesting!
I keep having people tell me Toffee has such long legs for a Sheltie... i think people around here prefer the petite ones...
In Germany I also remember having seen most Shelties who were more dainty and smaller than Toffee... I will try and see how tall he is LOL
