Hi Cindy, thanks for thinking of Sketchie. So far, no real progress to report. He is now on his 3rd antibiotic as of Monday, so it is still too early to determine whether or not this antibiotic (Doxy) will be effective. He is getting daily baths in Chlorhexidine and topical treatments 3x daily.

Within another week if no improvement happens, the last possible effective treatment will be Amikacin. We are still hoping to avoid having to use Amakacin as it has potentially very serious side effects including loss of sight, loss of hearing and balance, and kidney damage which can continue to worsen even once the drug is no longer being administered.

Sketch remains upbeat, happily playing short games of fetch and eating like a true Sheltie piglet...so he is thoroughly enjoying life and not aware of the gravity of his situation for which I am very thankful!

Gloria, if you can do all that you are a better contortionist than Missy's Cooper!!! :lol: But Sketchie thanks you for being such a cheer leader for his recovery.

Hi Cindy, it is not a "yes", but a "maybe". As well as the Doxy we are trying Amikacin as a topical. Injected Amikacin is only used if literally nothing else works due to it's dangerous side effects...but our vet found information for mixing it as a spray on topical which although it is not as hard hitting, the plus is that it doesn't have the potential for the damage that the injected does.

At this point the aggressive spread of the infection seems to have been stopped, but we still have a long way to go to wipe out the entrenched infection area that has been there for the past 3+ weeks.

If the topical is helping control the infection, Sketch's immune system will have more of a chance to clear it.

Whenever I get bummed about the mess Gavin is in, I remember that my friend Dana has lost 2 dogs within 6 weeks. One to torsion and one to cancer (by the time she collapsed and went to the vet, they were told Lily would die within days so they had her PTS)
 
I don't know if this will help Sketch or not but at this point it may not hurt to suggest it. I also wish I remembered this sooner. I found my bottle on the bottom of my grooming supply bag.

The last time Edan had surgery he had a wound that was being stubborn. At the suggestion of his breeder I used Chris Christenssen's Peace & Kindness Colloidial Silver. Within days it started to look healthier. At the time I bought it you could only buy a spray (I got the small bottle); now it also comes in a topical gel.

At this point it really can't hurt to try it.

a friend just lost her dog to aggressive sarcoma (too late by the time they found it), made me feel lucky to find Gavin's early. And think of you and Sketch. we still our babies.....this is all worth it.....:hugs
