Skunked! I need information!

I was just reading a web site called the many uses of vinegar, they said 50/50 solution should take the stink out.

Can I laugh now?

Yeah, but its his face (top of his nose) so I don't want to use something to smelly or that would sting his eyes.

Laugh away. :smile2:

Hey Barb, can you tell me where you bought that shampoo? I'm gonna need some unfortunately. Or if there's anything else you can recommend that your store sells.

Toby and Ginny both got skunked last night, Toby right in the face. Since it was midnight and just about everything was closed we used the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap mix, which did a surprisingly good job of removing the smell.

He still smells a bit (as does the whole house), so I want to try and shampoo his face. I might have missed some key areas on his face since I was trying not to get anything in his eyes.

Where else? Your local Pet Valu store! (and yes, I bought the product before I bought the store, LOL!). Not all stores carry it though. The other great product is Knock out! It removes just about EVERY odour, including stinky running shoes....truly!

This is what I was so afraid of, having a skunk living under my shed - it is now gone somewhere else, thanks to a live trap.

Melissa - Petvalu and Petsmart have a deskunking shampoo, not the one Barb recommended. I think it is Nature's Miracle?

Nature's Miracle is fine for normal smells, including pet urine, but I never found it as good as Orange Apeel and the Amazing Knock Out!

Thanks Barb! Heading over shortly to get one or the other. :smile2:

It was midnight when it happened and while we were scrambling around looking for deskunking chemicals, buckets, towels, etc., Toby and Ginny were having a ball wrestling and racing around the yard what was obviously a fun midnight romp.

They could have at least looked ashamed! :gaah

LOL! At least they were doing it outside and not IN!

When Indy was skunked last year, I didn't realize it until it was too late...he'd already ran inside and proceeded to rub himself against every piece of fabric he could find!

btw - Febreeze actually did a pretty good job on that....but the Knock out! I mentioned is also good for treating fabrics, not just dogs!

We live in the country & years ago I had an afghan who got skunked at 10pm. Of course I was going crazy. I had read somewhere about using tomato juice. Well, all I had was tomato soup so I figured to water it down & try that. WRONG!! She was a nasty looking & smelling mess. Nothing is worse than the combo of skunk & tomato. A friend gave me a recipe for a skunk shampoo that they said worked for their dog. I'll try to find & post it for reference. Just forget tomato juice!

My advice....skip the home remedies and proceed as quickly as you can to your local pet store!

Unfortunately, like most people, this happens at night when the stores are closed.....so my recommendation is simple: Always keep a supply of skunk deodorizer on hand....just in case. It a good investment even if you are fortunate enough to never have to use it!:smile2:

Actually, the home remedy worked surprisingly well. Now that I'm home and have been away from the smell for a while I've realized that it got approx. 97% of the smell off of him. Pretty impressive. I'm inclined not to treat him again, but I'll wait and see how much the smell bothers my dh.

Its definitely good to have either the ingredients on hand (dish soap, peroxide and baking soda) or a deskunking shampoo on hand for such emergencies as mine. These things never seem to happen when stores are open. :rolleyes2:

My only concern would be that there's no expiry date on the shampoo. At least with the home remedy they're things you usually have on hand and use, so they shouldn't be expired.

I can't see that soap would expire?????
