Actually, the home remedy worked surprisingly well. Now that I'm home and have been away from the smell for a while I've realized that it got approx. 97% of the smell off of him. Pretty impressive. I'm inclined not to treat him again, but I'll wait and see how much the smell bothers my dh.
Its definitely good to have either the ingredients on hand (dish soap, peroxide and baking soda) or a deskunking shampoo on hand for such emergencies as mine. These things never seem to happen when stores are open.
The home remedy does work really well. You actually reminded me that I should get some extra supplies just in case!!
Make sure that you can find where the skunk lives, or do a thorough check before you let them outside in the evening/night. I had a lab that got sprayed THREE times in less than 2 weeks...... Lets just say that we ALWAYS checked for skunks before we let him outside from then on
