soft-sided crate with curtains

What brand of crates do you two have? And besides the zipper issue, how're they holding up?

If Koji hasn't figured out the zipper on the play pen, he probably wont' get it on the crate, so I'm not concerned with that. He doesn't seem the type to figure out HOW to get out, just whines that he wants out. lol.

Thanks.

I have Petnation Port a Crates. I got them about 7-8 yrs ago so I don't know if they are exactly the same as the ones they have now. I have 5 medium ones and a small one that I train puppies in. The small one was Pikes when he was a baby so it is 7.5yrs old. Pike, Ember, Diva and now Bock have all used that kennel and Ember used it as her all the time kennel for 2yrs. It is currently in my car and Bock, Diva or Ember uses it at training class and Ember at shows. It looks just like it did the day I brought but alittle faded. Not bad for something used at least 2x a week for 7+ yrs and thrown around the back of the car.

It fact, all of them are holding up great except for one that I put Jazz in at my parents when I was gone. She went right thought the door. It looked like she whipped out a knife and cut it. I patched the door and it still works. Which brings up the fact that if the dog does not respect the kennel, it will not hold them. My dogs are taught from tiny puppies not to scratch at their kennels. The girls follow this rule except at the door zipper when I'm not looking. I have forgotten to zip Justice up and he doesn't leave the kennel except his head poking out to see where I 've gone.

Crates

I just bought a soft sided crate from Walmart for 46 bucks and it is great.I also have the NOZ TO NOZ wich I love also.

Just to add my two cents, if you're not looking to spend money on the name brand, we have these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/36-Portable-Pin...ltDomain_0&hash=item41555fedca#ht_2379wt_1139 (that's the link to the pink one)

Good price, and well-made. No curtains, though. We just bring a blanket to cover the crates.

(Lexi has learned how to unzip the zipper, too, but we have found that using a carabiner to clip the zippers together, and always placing the zippers on the bottom has prevented it from happening again)

Which brings up the fact that if the dog does not respect the kennel, it will not hold them.

For the most part, Koji doesn't scratch, push, etc. Since a blanket will be put over it, I'm thinking he won't be lunging at other dogs either (and it's a good time to practice his reactivity). I honestly don't think he'll break it, since he hasn't done it to his pen. :)

Thanks for the info, now to make that final decision.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations, I've given up on curtains as most of them may have them on the side, but none have it on the front, so I'll be using a blanket anyways. lol.

I'm going to check out all the links and make my decision. Not sure when we'll be trialling again (as I may pay for some private training instead), but this will be great when it's just Koji (w/o Miko).

And thanks Michele, I hope you're feeling better today.

Barb,

Do you have the tan or the green one?

I can't decide which one I'd get....still doing research though.

I actually have one of each.

The tan one is the smaller that I have. It's fine for a small Sheltie. My boys are both oversize (17 inches) so neither one of them really fits that crate anymore. I think it was the size called "medium"

My other is green and larger. I cram both my boys into into it for the 5 minute trip across the river on the boat to the cottage.

The curtains roll up and and secured with velcro. It works well. There are curtains on three sides. The only part that is mesh only is the front door.

we have the lime/blue Guardian Gear soft crate - from Petedge.
similar style- different brand (tan/blue) from Dog.com
Dog digs- smaller tan crate- won in a raffle.

also we have multiple pop-up crates from Walmart/Target- the pups sleep in these.

Justicemom is right- if they don't respect the crate- no soft crate will work :wink2:
