"State Only" Adoption Rules Too Strict

I'd consider writing to the rescues that are close to you but out of state with the info you noted in your post and ask them to consider you. Then I'd follow up w/a call to them. Def. attend any adoption event they host and try to meet the rescue mgmt., you might be able to get them to waive their requirement for you. But I do agree, they're limiting themselves esp. if they have dogs that are waiting waiting waiting for a home while you could take one home with you.

Devil's advocate for a sec too though-I know a cat rescue group on fb that only adopts to someone w/in 100 miles of them, their reasoning is they want to be able to retrieve a cat if it ends up in a bad family. So I guess I can understand why these rules exist, but they need to have some common-sense too and be willing to make exceptions for the situation of each animal.

Done, done and done. STILL get the "well, maybe you can find some place closer". What I like is the statement from one of these "state only" rescues, "Have you tried in (insert state 8 hrs away)? I understand they just received a group from a bordering state". The recipient rescue is further away (8 hrs) than the one originally dealt with (4 hrs). Believe me, we've got many references - even a couple other rescues. Blanket statements, such as "Not out of state", to me, are way out of line. Each situation is different, each potential adopter has different. Like I stated in my first post, there should be a Sheltie Score, like a FICO Credit Score. But, in many instances, and we're not the only ones, potential homes are not being considered because of their zip code.

here's the opposite scenario for you. after I lost Callie and before I brought Jocu home, I spent many hours on Petfinder. I saw a biblack sheltie that was very pretty at a rescue in Toronto. yes in Canada. for the heck of it I contacted them figuring that they would say no way to someone living in the south of Alabama. but they said they would consider it- then it was only if I could actually get there in a reasonable time to get her. I did decide not to pursue that adoption but there you go, some rescues are willing to work with you and your situation. at that time, the rescue that I had gotten Callie from didn't have any available shelties so I just kept looking until Petfinder didn't have any more listings.....

Oh my, this post hits close to home!
I wish these rescues understood the outstanding home you could provide!
My heart is heavy for you knowing you want to do the best for a rescued sheltie only to be turned away! So very sad!
I was so blessed that PSSR Precious Secret Sheltie Rescue allowed an out of state adoption of my beloved 15 year old Sheltie Chance! He is the love of my life! They cared enough to place him in a loving and caring home! Yes, they sent someone for a home visit to make sure all was in order! I hope and pray one day things will change! Open up your hearts and homes! If you can prove you can provide a great home and loving environment with the best health care... Why not do it? Please rescues... Understand we want to help you rescue the special souls!
My two cents...

I've been in contact with Pam at PSSR - in fact I inquired about a pair of girls they had, but she didn't think it would be a good fit. We adopted 4 of our rescues from PSSR, so Pam knows what we look for and our lifestyle. I just received an email from her today and she's still looking.... but only for ONE girl. We found a tri-merle a couple hours from here and we go to pick her up on Friday. My wife is ecstatic!

congrats on your new tri adoption!
Send pictures when you can!
Very exciting news indeed!

Cathy and Pam are the best!
PSSR made a positive impact on rescued shelties!
I will always be indebted to them for my beloved Mr Chance!

Oh, believe me, there will be pictures! I'll try to get a couple links on tomorrow evening.
Cathy and Pam have helped us so much - our 4 girls gave us so much love and joy. I can't imagine how my life would have been without any of them.

Life is better the more sheltie's in it.

Congratulations!

I understand distance limits if they want to do home visits.. But t some states are so close it is silly not to have it be my miles then. In california there are sheltie rescues that wont adopt in state unless close to the rescue (home visit. Requirements).
