Subcutaneous Mast Cell Tumour

Gavin had a subcutaneous mast cell tumor removed at the same time he had the tumor on his paw removed (and radiation therapy).
It was a tiny bump on his hip region. so small I lost it a few times under his fur.
The surgeon said they removed it with clean margins and there has been nothing done after that.
The incision was large, and his stitches burst (unable to repair) so it was a bandaged open wound for a few weeks.
I don't remember the grade, probably a 2?
If I remember, it is important to get them before metastasis which is why grade 2 was a relief.

Thank you Cindy and everyone.

Grace goes back tomorrow for further surgery to try and get clean margins. Further feedback from the pathologist was that it was a busy tumour with a high mitosis so we know there is a battle on our hands.

We have asked for a referral to an oncologist and we will take it from there. In the meantime, the support on here has been so appreciated.

PS Grace will be 9 in May not 8 as I thought. Where does the time fly? I'm could swear she's still a puppy.

Gavin was 10 when he underwent radiation, and he did wonderfully.
It was 28 treatments I believe.
expensive, but I still have my boy 5 years later.

I cherish every day now....my little cancer survivor is a gift

Oh... there is a massive thread in here on the whole radiation journey if you have a few hours to spare......no one else cares like the people here!

I haven't posted here in a while, as we've been living a happy carefree life with our Grace. She is now just short of 8 years old and our world has just fallen apart.

We found a lump on Grace's abdomen around 3 weeks ago and took her straight to the vet. The vet checked her over and tried to reassure us, booking her in for a fine needle aspiration. Unfortunately they could only draw blood and therefore the vet said the best thing was to remove the lump just to be on the safe side.

Grace had her lump removed last Friday and the vet said she'd not seen anything like it. It looked like hernia tissue but she'd sent it away to be tested to be on the safe side.

The results have come back today and the pathologist report says it's a Subcutaneous Mast Cell Tumour which they are unable to grade. The vet has rung the pathologist and she understands that it's a busy tumour with metasis?

The options now are to leave it and see if it grows again

Have a further blood test on the tissue called a Ki67 to establish how prolific the cancer cells are

Go in and operate removing a greater area to give bigger margins

Refer to an oncologist

Chemo

We have to consider one or a combination of these options.

I am totally floored. Cannot stop crying. It's like my world has just been turned upside down.

I'm just hoping there are others here who help, give suggestions or just maybe some sisterly love because I'm not sure who else to turn to.

I've just read through that, Cindy. What an incredibly hard but eventually rewarding journey you both went on. Thank you for documenting and sharing the entire experience. It's an enormous help and gives a sense of encouragement.

it was a HUGE bonding experience for us. A few months after his treatment, we went on a road trip up the CA coast to OR. we had a great time! and then that Christmas we went to the Grand Canyon. I was beyond thrilled with how he recovered.
