Summer Solstice Video

Duh! Dang I was tired that day...

Sorry about that Sophie! As to box styles, I know that all the pics I have seen from the club show the same box and that has been five years. Timber (dog on our team) has been doing flyball for 11 years, same style box. So I think it's been the same style box a while.

Caro,
Darby will be in the next tounament for sure but that's not until November. We have a couple promotional events coming up and I'm hoping he gets to participate then as well.

I'm not frustrated with her as much as I want to make sure she finds this fun.

Flyball looks like so much fun! I wish there was a team in my area. I know Bailey would be great at it.

It really is a blast. It is the only dog sport that is a true 'team' sport. You get the binefit of interacting with other people and their dogs and come to rely on them and learn to work with them..

Your success is based on your team members succeeding!

Actually a flyball team about an hour away just emailed me back and invited me to their practice. So, maybe we'll get a chance after all. Hmmmm what makes a good flyball dog? She does have a ball obsession.

Does she fetch? Does she like to play tug? Does she like treats?

Liking the ball is a good thing but not the most important. If the dogs only did it for teh ball they would rush really fast to the box but then stop and hold the ball or at best come back to you slowly..

Any dog can be trained to do flyball (even Deja I hope!!)

The old-style boxes were one reason I never went further with Cadbury at the time, I was too concerned he would slam and hurt himself. These new boxes, though, I think he could do.

You mean the American style boxes (as opposed to those strange things they used to use at Crufts?). My understanding was those boxes were designed for greater speed. And they do allow for nicer swimmers turns but I have noticed many of the top dogs still slam into the box.

I think a good flyball dog loves to run - and being a little nutter helps! So yeh, Bailey would do great (lol).

She loves to fetch and loves to play tug and is very food motivated, so she loves treats.

She does love tennis balls. However, she is still very distracted. She will bring the ball back to me....unless the neighbor is in the yard or something. then she will drop it and go bark at them.

Yes that's it. The American ones the dogs pick up the ball, as opposed to triggering a pad that causes the ball to then fly.

The Crufts style box the dogs really did slam hard into them and also it could cause them to turn awkwardly which resulted in injury. The US style does allow the 'swimmer's turn' as you say, but it still needs to be taught.

Complicated business, this flyball.

No worries about the name Wayne, I spend my life being called Susie, Stacey or Tracey, very rarely Sophie!

Go for it Randi! Bailey will love it!

The balls are still actually being launched. It's just that they are being launched down low. The pad they jump on still triggers the ball. Look at the video of Darby. On one of the runs the ball goes flying because he missed it. It launched into his face and then bounced away.
