Summertime trim

Anything I have read, thier coat acts as an insulater to heat & cold.I brush, brush here as everyone else does to keep the air circulated.I think I would really be upset if I took Trapp or Jasper and someone had a happy time with clippers or scissors.

Other than a health issue,I do not feel a summer clip should be done.

I suppose I'd trim their bellies if I thought they were suffering a lot from the heat, but that would be about it. It wouldn't help them to shave them since the double coat insulates. It would also take a long time for the fur to grow back.

I would only shave a sheltie completely for medical issues or severe matting.

Survey says.....No trimming !!! I do not think I could bring myself to do it anyways. The dog that was trimmed last summer has all its hair grown back and looks good. You could not tell he was trimmed at all.

and I'm worried about Jake's front leg being shaved for his neuter :eek2: Maybe I can convince them not to shave the leg.

I used to have a cairn terrier that we kept in a modified puppy cut, but it looked cute on him and they do not have the same type of coat.

Talk to them. I have not shaved my own dogs ever, except for Ember's abdomen during her spay.

Also make sure they DO NOT shave the feathers off the back of the arm. I had a tech that like to do that because she didn't like the tape getting stuck in it. I showed her how to sooth them down and threatened her hair if she did it again. That looked horrible for greater part of 6 months, not my dog but still.:(

summer time

I will cut/shave Gavin's belly, as that helps him cool down.
Other than that, normal brushing is it!

I have seen 'lion' cuts and 'but' shaves. look silly..poor pups :(
I imagine it makes it easier on the owner, but Gavin is a package deal and I love the whole package :D

I know people who give summer trims. Not sure how much they take off, though. As for me, I don't shave (mainly because I'm trying to finish Cisco )

But if you believe that shaving is not an option, there is something else, besides brushing, that you could do. Buy yourself a rake: http://www.cherrybrook.com/index.cf.../469365/catid/213/vname/Safari_Undercoat_Rake

If you know how to line comb a dog, then you have the basic idea of raking. But instead of just dragging the rake tool through the coat, do more of a picking action. You'll be surprised at how much undercoat you can get out! This is also another way to stimulate the hair to grow.

I know you are not supposed to trim a dog during the summer. But is there anything you can do to keep them cool? I brush Buffy every day to get her undercoat out, but she is such a fluff ball. It is only 77 today and she was so hot!

Try raking her (how I explained above). You might also have your house set too warm.

Regular brushing for sure. The undercoat does work as an insulator....but to a point. Too thick and and the skin can't breathe.

I have given Timber a belly shave in the past. But left the guard hairs long. It allowed him to lie on the cooler tile and chill a little.
