You were lucky. My Lab Jo didn't settle down until she was 13yrs(died at 14). My brothers Lab Griffey hasn't settled down yet and he is almost 10.
That why I have Shelties.
He really has changed,grown up attitude,and just tickled that he really does listen well.He has learned to wait & be patient.After looking at the video myself,it was very noticeable.
So I feel quite proud of him.I think having Earnhardt as an example to follow has helped,and his awesome upbringing before he came home has had a huge impact on him.
Weighed him this afternoon,and he weighs 19lbs. And is 15" tall.

Trapp does look all grown up now- and he was such a cute little guy not very long ago

LOL...that is why I am taking a break from setters for awhile. They don't grow up until they are at least 5. I love the sporting breeds, don't get me wrong, but I just wanted to take a little break (my Cedar passed away a year ago).

Fourtunatley, Mya is turning 3 years this month and is well out of her teenage stage. When I first got her...she chewed every toy she could find and ate every crayon she could find ( her poopies were very colorful). Now..she loves being my designated pest.
She always whines to go for a walk...even when I have took her out for 2 hours. I swear...there is never enough walks to keep 'little princess' happy.

(p.s. Aren't crayons great! I always thought they were wonderful for keeping my forever pup, Timber, stools nice and firm. Who needs pumpkin when you have small kids leaving their stuff lying around!)

I thought the saying is "a tired dog is a good dog"??? Bailey was in doggie day care for 7 hours yesterday. From 8am to 3pm. She was running around the whole time and playing with all the other dogs. You would think she'd be knocked out for two days....nope, not my dog. All my friends's dogs are exhausted for 2 days after a few hours in day care. what is wrong with Bailey??? She was completely normal at home. I got home at 930pm and she was as wild as ever. She stole my camera off my nightstand, was barking, jumping to try and get water bottle, biting my slippers as I tried to walk. She woke me up at 7am this morning. I took her out to go to the bathroom. Then I tried to go back to sleep, but she wouldn't let me. She was barking and scratching at the door. I put her in her crate and she slept for an hour. She heard my mom and el chihuahua get up, so she started crying and barking in crate. Am I ever going to get any sleep? What will tire this dog out???
Bailey sounds so much like Phebe -- boundless energy and a high need for mental stimulation. To be honest, I think if I weren't able to be home with her right now, we could very well have a pile of chewed shoes and a home with Interiors by Sheltie.
A tired dog is a good dog, but sometimes it takes quite a bit to get to tired. When I was still working last fall, Phebe was 7-8 months old and we were taking two 45-60 minute walks every day (often in the dark). That was in addition to daycare 3x a week, agility once a week and obedience class once a week.
When you go out for walks or to the dog park, include plenty of mental stimulation. Practice sit-stays, down-stays, distance recalls and teach tricks. You'll never be able to run faster or longer than she can, so use balls and discs to give her a workout. If you're planning to do agility training and Bailey usually walks on your left, switch things up and walk her on your right. She's going to need to be comfortable on either side for agility.
It does get better. At 11 months, Phebe still requires a lot of activity. We walked 2+ miles to agility class yesterday and played fetch in the park for 30 minutes before our class, and it still took the first 20 minutes of class to get her to settle down and really focus. What's better is her willingness to be patient when I can't give her immediate attention. Also, for us, bones are a godsend. She loves to chew on a nice marrow bone. It's work and the chewing calms her.
