TERRIFYING weekend

That must have been so scary. I'm just glad Cruz is ok.

I use a martingale with Lacey, but because she is super reactive to cars and I don't like to walk her out near the roads because of that. I just can't seem to train that out of her so we just stay in our little neighborhood. She can hear the cars going by on a busy street and see them at one point and I have a heck of a time getting her attention.

I did have a dog hit by a car once. He survived, but it was and still is a nightmare to even think about.

Cass...so thankful that your Cruz didn't sustain any injury...and bless the lady who stopped after hitting him and helped you...so many people just drive on when they have hit a little animal.

terrifying

Glad he is OK!!!!, and not seriously injured, phew!-guardian angel protection over your sheltie angel, indeed!

Life happens, you do the BEST you can with situations, but some stuff is definitely out of your control.

I have posted that mine become reactive when encountering certain runners. I will pull them aside, put them both in sit-stay-focus and yet the flailing, gyration types, still set them off sometimes, and for some reason those types are oblivious to everyone and everything when they run and have NO concept of the share the trail. To me it is courtesy to move over on a trail when others have purposely gotten off the trail, you don't MOVE closer and cause avoidable issues. I haven't figured out WHY those types run almost directly into oncoming mt bikers, making them ANGRY-lots of "language" on trails with those types and their behaviors. Yikes. I could see where I could be in your situation easily, and it would be so scary. Because their herding instinct can overcome sometimes...:(

I have had collars break, won't have a plastic snap closure type ever again. I want metal buckles for security. I have lost grip and have had bolting. Stuff like that is split second mishap, and you do your best to contain the situation. I try to be super careful of maintaining my dogs on lead, and voice recall is never 100% effective. Even a trained dog can have a lapse.

Blessings on you and Cruz and may his recovery be speedy and FULL.

It is so wonderful that there was no damage to Cruz! I can't even imagine how I would handle hearing those sounds!

I've had a leash not attach properly to a harness too, luckily we were on our side street and the driver of the car saw what was happening in time to stop it.

One trick I've learned when the dogs are running and not listening to your calling...you can try falling to the ground and making a distressed call. (Hard to do when you're terrified of not catching them in time) I heard someone at the rescue recommend it when a dog got loose and I tried it recently when Honey was chasing after some rabbits, worked like a charm.

I have tears in my eyes reading all your posts.. Cruz is my baby and I know all of you feel the exact same way about your little ones. I can't imagine my life without him, yet I am in absolute awe that he is still with me today. Thank you all for your kind words.

Cruz does have a martingale collar. It is one with a buckle, and I think some of his hair got caught in the buckle and it didn't close properly.. hence, it breaking away when he pulled on the leash. We went out today and bought a non-buckle martingale.. no more getting away from us! I want this little boy to be around for a long, long time.

I am so thankful to hear that your little Cruz came through this terrifying incident unharmed. You can not beat yourself up over this, like human parents, pet parents will also have accidents and they are called accidents for a reason. I will keep you and your baby boy in my thoughts and prayers that the repeat sets of blood work and temperature come back normal. :fl :hugs

Oh how awful for you! So happy to hear Cruz is ok! I hope you're ok now too, sounds like one of the most stressful things imaginable :hugs

Ruffwear Webmaster harness is the only harness I have found that is slip-proof -- but the back strap needs to be snug but not excessively tight.

I also have my boy Logan wearing a harness if we are going anywhere but short walks around the block! He carries such a full ruff that he slipped out of his collar when going to the groomer. He almost ran into a four lane highway until the young lady at the groomer saw what was happening. I cut him off and he ran down a side street. It took us 6 blocks to finally catch him! :gaah

When I read the post title I also feared the worst!
Thank GOD your little Cruz is OK. :hugs
