Texarkana Kennel Club Show

I'm hoping you have a great time, meet great people, great dogs, and revel in the glory of a mass of people who are of one mind - dogs rule. (Oh course WE all know Shelties are the best...:biggrin2:)

Long post ahoy!

Even though the air conditioning in the building went out, the dog show was GREAT. I felt so sorry for everybody in there (including myself!). The poor dogs were all panting, and a lot of the handlers had on long sleeve shirts. June in Texas ain't known for being cool. The water in the Coke machine sold out fast.

Out of all the events, I think the best part was getting to watch Jennifer prep Shaine for the show. I learned a lot of things watching her. She uses an electric shaver to trim paw pads, and then goes and trims some parts with scissors. The electric shaver made no noise AT ALL. I also learned I have been using the wrong scissors to trim Fluffy's whiskers.

First up was Terry and his black and tan coonhound, Loretta (Windbourne Hello Dalrin'). Loretta won three things. I'm still so very new to all of this, so I don't know what two of them were, but the third one was Best of Opposite. Loretta won three ribbons. :biggrin2:

Next up was Mr. Shaine (Rosestone's Luck of the Irish). While Shaine did not win BOB he did win first place in his class. Sadly, I also do not know what class it was. Shaine got a blue ribbon.

Jennifer's mom, Deidra, won 4th place in the Bred By category (I think I have that right).

I am not sure if Jennifer's friend, Erin, won anything or not. Her ring schedule conflicted with Jenifer's and Terry's so I was not able to watch her breed showing. I did watch her in the herding puppy group, but she did not win. Erin shows Australian Cattle Dogs.

I was also unable to watch any obedience/rally events. I kept waiting to see the collies, but the collies never came. There were no collies signed up for the show. :rolleyes2: I sat and paced back and forth between rings trying to find them (later on I learned I could buy the show program for $6 so I would know what was going on in which ring). That show made me realize how lazy I have been with my two though. We gotta quit being lazy and kick it into high gear so we can get out there and do something again. Dr. visits or no we can at least go to the park once a week or something.

I was very impressed with not only all of the dogs, but also the people there. If you didn't know something you could ask any of them and they would tell you without acting rude or hateful. There were loud noises, barking, and all other things going on, and not one dog (that I saw) spazzed out or got upset while in the ring. I could not believe it. I kept thinking how Smudge would have bolted out of the front door if he had heard some of the noises!

Tomorrow is the last day of the show. I'm excited to go, but sad that it will be over after that.

Did I mention I bought stuff? I bought Smuff some bones from the Pet Deli, some Magic Touch (I don't know why I thought it was called Naked Care), and two water pails for their crates. ALL of the show people have water pails in their crates instead of crate bowls!

Oh that looks and sounds like so much fun!!
Good thing you went there first without Smudge... that way when you do bring him to stuff like that you know what's what and can con cetrate on keeping/getting him calm!
;)

That's the only bad thing, besides the air conditioning, about today. I kept thinking to myself how in the WORLD I was going to get poor, terrified Smudge to the point to where he was comfortable with that.

There were very, very loud noises over the PA, dogs barking, dogs sniffing each other, MEN (Smudge is terrified of men and children), and lots of smells I'd sure he'd want to investigate. Obedience is HARD, and I know it's going to be an uphill battle. :dead: But we must press onward. :biggrin2: He might be 14 and 1/2 before he gets his CGC, but by jolly he's going to do it.

Speaking of which, guess who was at our dog show? One of the ladies who owns the obedience school! It was the one with the golden retriever. I didn't get to see her in action either. :dead: I missed ALL the other events. I think tomorrow there is a huge gap between Terry and Jennifer's events (Terry's is at 8 again, and I think shelties go in at 1). So I will try to catch something there.

Also do more shopping. :biggrin2:

WOW more shopping!!! Were there alot of vendors there?? The one today only had 3....boooooo Although than again you saw the pics of the show site...so it really shouldnt have been a surprise!! :)

There wasn't a lot at all. But, Texarkana is still a very small town compared to others AND they were having the San Antonio show today as well.

They had the CC booth (also had other products like the Magic Touch, and the water pails I bought). Then they had the Pet Deli where I bought my bones, chocolate and fudge (I know! Chocolate and Fudge at a dog show!), and a few other vendors selling pointless items like magnets, ect. Nothing had a sheltie on it, of course. :rolleyes2: Figures.

I didn't eat anything the entire time I was there. I got there at 7:20, and didn't eat until 4 something. :dead: I was HUNGRY. Nobody was really eating anything, and so I didn't want to say anything.

Did I mention they had a corgi speciality?! My word. I thought I was going to hurl if I seen another corgi! They start showing corgis at 8 and didn't finish until close to 1. :dead:

As somebody who is just watching I think it's more fun to have friends who show differnet breeds of dogs. The coonhounds were fun because Terry had one, and the cattle dogs were fun because Erin had one.

Today is the last day of the show. :( I don't want it to be over, because it is so much fun! :biggrin2: Hopefully today I can catch some performance events.

Also, I found out that Shaine won Best of Open Sables. I posted earlier that I didn't know what class. Good luck to them again today, and either tonight or tomorrow I will post pictures on my shutterfly page. I'm taking pictures for 5 or 6 people, and I promised to email them in full size to everybody.

It's a lot of pictures from yesterday alone. :uhoh:
