The 80s Crimper look.

At that height Smudge would be jumping 16" -- same height as Phebe. Most BCs I've seen jump 20" or 24". There are a lot of Shelties at the 16" height.

Just for the record, it totally depends on the venue :) At USDAA, Smudge would jump 22--with the BCs. USDAA is not as forgiving with their height options, It's 8", 12", 16", 22", 26". Anything over the aforementioned height (even by a smidgen!) has to jump the higher height class, at least at the championship level. That's why in USDAA the Performance option is popular. It allows dogs (like tall shelties) to compete at a more reasonable height. For example, in Championship, a 17" sheltie jumps 22", in Performance, they would jump 16" (much safer).

Edan is a GREAT example of how the jump heights can change between venues. At 14.5 inches, he is either 1/2 inch above or 1/2 inch below the height change depending on venue:
  • CPE: 12 inches
  • TDAA: 12 inches
  • USDAA (Champion): 16 inches
  • AKC: 16 inches
  • NADAC: 16 inches

Honestly, I think Edan prefers to jump 16 inch jumps but in trials, unless I have to jump in at 16, I'll gladly take the 12 inch jumps. If we decide to do any USDAA trials, I'll probably do Preferred class and jump him at 12 because I don't really intend to spend a lot of time/money on USDAA.

Thanks for pointing that out. I always think in AKC terms, because I currently don't have any interest in USDAA because of the 22" height. IMO, that's a ridiculous difference between AKC and USDAA.

Yes, I'm not sure why they have such gaps between heights. If Bentley were over 16", he would definitely do Performance and jump 16, not 22. It really isn't healthy for him to consistently jump that high.

Uhm.. now I measured again and he is just over 17 inches, JEEEZ what is wrong with me.. lol. I need help measuring my dog!?!?

Smudge is 17 and 1/4 inches. We could just pretend that Toffee was the same height. They are twins, after all. It wouldn't hurt to "Smudge" the numbers a little would it?

NOT at all... I prefer to Smudge that number, and if I measure him again... wouldn't it be FUNNY if it was 17 and 1/4? That would be exactly like the Smudge Meister, lol

Toffee would have to jump the 22 Regular here, my trainer said. I will wait and if I am not comfortable with him jumping that high I could make him a 16 Specials dog which eliminates the spread and double jumps and lowers the A-Frame and table ... but I will see what I think down the road.

I just measured Abbie (she's more comfortable now and didn't wiggle for the measurement) - 18 inches even!! I just stared at it a moment and blinked. I knew she was somewhere over 17, but geez. It is so funny to see her and Duncan play... By the way, Duncan is apparently 13 inches (I think I've been measuring from the wrong point)!! Yay for in-sizedness.

Sorry, couldn't help it.

Jump heights too tall do concern me. I try to have Duncan jump low while he's approaching one year (about two weeks to go). I'm not sure I could see him doing 16".

What an adorable video. They look so cute together. Thanks for sharing. Abbie does look huge compare to Duncan. What a difference in size.
