The little @#*!@!**

Well, it sounds like you also give him food when you put him back in his crate after his nightly wake-ups, so he's also associated it with food? At 4 months he should be fine with breakfast, lunch and dinner and not need middle of the night food.

ah yes, the problems of having a barky dog and living in multifamily housing.
I can't just let him bark it out all the time :(
so he gets small amount of food in a treat ball whenever I put him in his pen.
it seems to work well at his initial bedtime at least, he rarely complains when he's done eating. the other ones, though....
he gets small amounts of food at shower time, too.
his food is split up quite a bit, and mixed in with cheerios.

I say test the theory and let him sleep with you for another night or two or three and see if you get the same peaceful night. If he wakes you up in the middle of the night, I'd crate him in the room with you. The deal is if you want to be on the bed, you sleep all night. Otherwise, back to the crate but close to mom.

You bet he can hold it through the night. We train 9 week old puppies to sleep all night in crates and they all make it through the night. I have never had a puppy that didn't! Part of it is that they don't want to soil where they sleep, but it proves that they can do it. I've always kept them crated in the bedroom with me until about six months or they're pretty solid with house training, but there are no hard and fast rules. They're all different. Bottom line, do what works for you and your boy!

And don't you love how well they train us???? :ROFLMAO: Boy are WE easy to train! :banghead:

the first night he did mess in his crate :( much crying ensued.
Then after 2 weeks even during the day he stopped pooping in his pen (barking in the middle of the night to go out for pooping).
Then he decided to wake me 3x a night :(

maybe he should be called 'pico the brat'
he barks sooo much
thankfully not at people or dogs or sounds.
mostly during play and at me?
I am hopeful he will outgrow most of that.
I am doing the same things I did that worked with Gavin (he barked during play and when I left).

View attachment 19834 So he is in his penned in area. Its a crate (30") with a nice pad and toys plus an area with water and puppy pad grates. the entire area is ~30" x 42", it was more but he decided to pee not on the grates so I had more to clean up! Its where he is when I am not home (I am gone for ~6 hours a day for work, so its for when I can't take him out but he has to pee). Once he is potty trained we will adjust as needed until he doesn't need to be confined anymore. He will always have access to a crate (probably the soft sided one I have) as that's easier to move than the open wire one.

I don't play with him when I take him out to potty at night (or anytime we go out for potty really) so I don't know why he'd fixate on that for attention.

The first night I had him I crated him in my bedroom. He did pretty well. I guess I could try that again, but I had hoped he would just pee on his own and not wake me during the night if he was in his penned area (thats what Gavin did).
Yes I always crated in my bedroom…actually initially the crate was beside the bed so I could reach over if I had to (never did). The crate has stayed in my bedroom until they were able to jump on the bed…that’s always been my standard for when they could sleep on it.
