Yes, she looks very much like a sheltie, except for the ears. I can understand your confusion if you'd never seen or heard of one before. :smile2:

Yes -- our previous vet had a low opinion of whomever was taking care of her. He said she was probably abandoned, as she was very dirty and had ear infections, and was a little bit bony. And March was COLD up here. I don't know how long she was out in the cold, she could have been more than a day abandoned. Not sure. She had on a puffer coat and was filthy, and the collar on her was meant for a dog about 3x her size (and it was ugly to boot). We'll probably never know. Wish we did, but she's got a good home now.

At the time, we did submit our name & phone to all the authorities in the area, and called shelters nearby too, to let them know that we had this dog, and described her in detail. We also posted on Craigslist, even though our Animal Control officer told us not to ("it brings out the crazies", she says).

When she was a puppy, with the whippy tail and the ears and spots, we thought maybe she was a Field Springer Spaniel, or Border Collie mix, but after looking at growth charts for Border Collies and Spaniels, and having her probable age (vet guessed from her teeth), she was coming in VERY small for her age.

As it turns out, Trixie's build is exactly like a Sheltie in size and proportion. I checked out the Sheltie growth charts linked out of this forum. She's right in the center of the growth limits. She's about 9 months old, going on 10 months, and is only about 14 inches at the shoulder and 17 inches from base of the tail to the name of her neck. She's about 20 lbs, and that's with a healthy diet.

And yea, I've got the Sheltie bug, I think. :)

Oh and yes Craigslist does bring out the unsavory individuals.

Thanks for rescuing this little cutie! Loving to be on the bed is a Sheltie thing, too. My rescue girl is a big snuggler, too - and my Sheltie angel-boy made snuggling into bed pillows an olympic-style sport.

I recently adopted a 5 year old former puppy mill mama named Bela. She is so sweet and loving. If you want another Sheltie, you can't go wrong with adopting from your local rescue. These folks have made matching the right dog with the right home into a fine art.

Welcome to the forums. Trixie is very cute. I can certainly see the sheltie and the spaniel in her.

I have found that sheltie males can go either way in terms of dominance depending on the male. They are usually pretty tolerate even when in charge and they do really care what you think and are huge love sucks. My male Justice is the dog leader of my pack but you would never know it. He lets the girls push him around(nothing loves to throw their weight around like a female sheltie) and loves it but if it is important to him, the girls don't stand a chance. A look and thats it. My boy Jaime doesn't have a leadership bone in his body. He is the happy happy follower. That's great thing about shelties, they usually get along really well with other dogs which is why it is easy to have a pack of them. Between myself and my friend we have 10 and they can all play together and there is rarely a problem and that with 3 intact males and 5 intact females.(2 are altered)

Oh and Diva says even purebred shelties can have freckles. Check out her legs. Goes way back to spaniels used to form the sheltie breed or so I'm told.

You've come to the right place for multiple Shelties, welcome! And bless you for taking this little girl in. She is darling, and Trixie suits her! Once you have Shelties one is never enough. And more IS better! Good luck with your search and do keep us posted. Love the pictures too! :biggrin2:

soft spot for spaniels- grew up with a blond cocker and then my first grownup dog was a cocker mix.
but now I have 3 shelties- 2 girls and 1 boy and they do get along with everybody :winkgrin:
 
I have to say Trixie is just about the cutest little thing ever. I have read this whole thread,and one thing is very clear...you have got the sheltie bug!
Watch out,2 years ago,we started with 1,we now have 3,plus a lab.

Two of our males are half brothers.We always have had males,and found male dogs to be so much easier.Only have fosters in past years,gave us the experiance with females.
Then a year ago(gosh how time flys) we rescued a lethal white that is blind & deaf.Her name is Mia. Believe me,she rules the roost here,and the boys love her.

Wishing you lots of fun here,and the wealth of knowledge compiled here is very helpful.
