Thinning Shears...?

Had to laugh - thought my father was the only serial wedding addict, our (Greek) family can't believe anyone should be allowed to marry 5 times.

Well, she is working on her 6th divorce. And I have to correct myself. It was the 4th husband that moved us to Arkansas. The 5th is the one that she wants to make the 7th once the 6th is divorced. Wow, I know her and MY head is spinning...

No worries...I've done it myself, once or twice!!!

Yes... To give some obscure advice, I heard that the one sided are better for thicker fur. I haven't put this theory into practice, though. My Pap only needs his feet trimmed. This whole fluffy dog thing needing grooming is new to me.

You guys are too funny. Sounds like a soap opera! I'm also a member of the leftie-tried-to-make-rightie group. As a result I do everything with my right hand except write--which is the one thing they tried to change but I am still a leftie. Fortunately for me, I cut with my right hand so yay, cheap shears! The advice here on which to buy is really valuable. I've been through three pair now and don't like any of them. Takes forever to cut anything with them. Time to shop!

You can usually get halfway decent thinning/straight shears at Sally's Beauty Supply... They're not too pricey, and though they aren't top-grade, they get the job done for a one-or-two-dog household. Mom has a couple different pairs of rather-expensive thinners and straights in the tack-box, but for me, with just one pup and no shows to take him to, the Sally's shears are perfect.

I've never tried the double-thinners; we've always used the one-bladed sort.
I bought the Eclipse Silver Series Blender Shears 28 TH at Sally's and have been happy with them. Since Phebe is only 7 months, I mostly use them for trimming her ears (using the 'Anna' method :smile2:). Depending on how her coat develops, I may need to buy something else later, but these and small scissors for her feet all I need for now.

Sally's? I never even thought of them, that's an excellent idea!

Are they double thinning edge or single? The specs didn't say or I didn't understand.

For around $25 to $35 you can find great straight shears also, just as Tofu Pup said. When I have feet to trim that are gritty with dirt, I always use my Sally's shears. We get them sharpened at the dog shows, and I know the people doing it laugh at us. People in the poodle game pay upwards of $800 for a pair shears.

Yes, we just got a Sally's near where we live. Unlike most of these type of shops, you don't have to be a stylist to buy anything. My friend is a hair stylist and recommended a pair that she has from Sally's. They cost me all of $10 and work great. I haven't had them long enough to tell you how long they'll last but my friend uses them every day at work so they must last a while, or she wouldn't buy them.

I'll try and remember to look at the brand name when I get home.

I found out from my breeder that we have a Sally's in Ottawa as well.

I'm still hung up on whether to get double-edged or single-edged. The "guide" says double-edge. But every other tutorial I've read, watched, always uses single.

Does anybody know what the advantage of a double or single will be. Maybe only our hairdressers know for sure! :wink2:
